French Creations.
Gowns recently sent over from-
Paris are made up of these silks and

lustrous Sapho silks on. account of
their texture and exquisite colorings.

Semi-Precious Stones.
Matching sets of semi-precious
stones, topfaz, amythlsts, aqua ma
rines, olivenes and others of this
class are made up into bracelets and
necklaces, which are more often
than not of the dog-collar order.
Corsage pins, and various head orna
ments (not tinrras), are as much of
a fad for function dress as are
matching parasols, hats, etc, for
street attire.
Untiling Suits at the Pier.
Narragansett is very popular this
season, and at the bathing hour on
its beautiful beach, or dining In
groups of Intimates afterward in the
pavilion one recognizes many mem
bers of Newport's smartest contin
gent. As always one sees the top
notch of nttractivoness in the bath
ing suits worn here. They vary from
all black to pale pinks nnd baby
blues, but the cut and trimmings are
of the best and where elaborate
dressing is so general theso suits aro
not so conspicious as they would
seem In less ornate surroundings.
, Silk the Material.
Whatever color may bo selected
the favorite material for these suits
Is silk, usually taffeta and if a grnde
made of pure silk is used, nothing Is
so satisfactory. This material does
not cling or shrink, and holds its
color as well as anything in the salt
water.

In an Interview printed In yester
day's "Chronicle," Theodore Star
rett, president of a great eastern con
struction company, and as experi
enced a city builder as tho country
affords, expressed his admiration of
tho policy being pursued In tho resto
ration of tho business district of this
city. Tho first thing for tho city to
do is to hold and provide for its
business. Business can bo dono In
shacks. Inconveniently, It js true, but
It can bo done. Merchandising nnd
Industries will occupy more ground
spaco than when tall buildings are
available, and tho offices which
formerly occupied tho lofts of many
buildings will bo temporarily thrust
back, as they aro now, Into tho resl
donee districts. But tho business of
tho city will go on. There will be
profits In It, as thero has always
been. With those profits permanent
buildings will bo erected on modern
lines, and under tho Influence of the
artistic feeling which has como with
our advancing civilization; and so,
little by llttlo but surely and In
duo season, tho city beautiful will
replnco tho city practical, which will
earn tho money for Its ultimate
adornmont.
In ,th9 maim the' now buildings in
tho business district will bo far bol
ter "liulldings than those destrpyed.
