Convicts Commit Crimes.
Valparaiso, Aug. 21. Tho govern
ment has ordered the Immediate con
struction of houses of wood and zinc,
to houso tho homeless. Military en
gineers arc repairing tho railroad and
telegraph lines. Large parties of
convicts who escaped have been com
mitting all sorts of crimes. Over fif
ty have been publicly shot.

Scott Sawyer Dead.
Sllverton, Ore., Aug. 21. Scott
Sawyer, proprietor of tho Sllvorton
Steam Laundry, dropped dead from
heart disease Saturday ovelng at tho
Breltenbush Hot Springs, whoro ho
had been for a week.
Mr Sawyer left hero a week ago In
company with John Hicks and a Tele
gram representative, arriving at tho
springs last Wednesday, and tho old
gentleman was heard to remark, after
his lG-mlle ride up tho mountain
trail from Detroit, that ho never felt
better. His death came suddenly.
His body was brought out to De
troit on a pack horso Sunday, and
was shipped to Sllverton for burial

Rainey withdrew upon tho assem
bling of tho convention, nnd seconded
Justice Boggs for Chairman. Boggs
took tho chair. Boggs in his speech
of acceptance mentioned Bryan's
name, which elicited slight applause
but it was far from an enthusiastic
