Portland, Or., Aug. 2. From Sa
lem to Stay ton, in Mnrion county, L'S
miles, eastern capitalists associated
with Andrew Welch and tho Willam
ette Valley company will construct
a standard-guago electric railroad
A largo part of the rights of way
have been secured and surveyors
havo been In tho field a month. The
road will cost $500,000 or moro.
Southeast of Salem, tho road will
run through a rich agricultural coun
try to the north fork of the Santiam
river and this stream will eventually
furnish power, It is thought, for this
lino nnd other projects of the Wil
lamette Valley company. Further
up tho Santiam aro largo timber
holdings, and it is believed tho ulti
mate object of tho promoters Is to
tap this region via Mehaiua. Noth
ing has been done this far to indi
cate that tho road will go farther
than Stnyton. The project as now
planned will end there.
C. II. Butcher, a member of tho
Philadelphia firm of Rhodes, Slncler
& Butcher, who aro financing elec
tric power, light, gas and wnter
plants of the Willamette Valley com
pany, under tho management of Mr.
Welch, Is in Portland, accompanied
by Messrs. Reed of Philadelphia
and I. W. Anderson of Spokane.
Mr. Anderson is tho Washington
member of tho syndlcato and has
chargo of projects at Spokane, Walla
Walla and other points. They are
spending soveral millions of dollars
In development projects In tho two
states.
Construction of electric roads in
the Willamette valley will, It is
said, benefit not only the tributary
towns and agricultural communities,
but will help Portland's wholesale
and retail business. Theso conven
ient transportation lines create new
business by facilitating and cheap
Ing travel.
With construction of tho Portlnnd
Salem electric road by Brastow &
Co., tho Salem-Stayton lino by the
Welch syndicate, Portland will have
electric railway transportation direct
to the Santiam. It is said other
projects aro being developed that
will eventually glvo a network of
olectrlc roads, of which tho Portland
Salem lino will sorvo as a main lino,
bringing tho traffic of the valley Into
this city.

Now York, Aug. 2. With contin
ued very unfavorable advices from
both England and the Continent, the
market hero shows a decidedly
stronger feeling for both 1905 hops
and the coming 190G crop. Several
transactions on tho local markets
have been reported at from 11 cents
for poor California hops up to 13
cents for bettor grades, while choice
Pacific coast hops aro now held at
11 cents. On the Pacific the prospec
tive short European crop has caused
heavy contracting for tho 190G crop
and as hluh as 13 cents has been
paid. Considerable buying of 1905
hops has also reported In New York
state and from 7 to 10 cents has
been paid for soveral hundred
bales. Crop news from all points
in this country continuo excellent.
but the latest advices from England
aro very poor anu estimates are
heard as low as 290,00 cwt. last
year. Reports from tho Continent
also continuo rather poor, as tho at
tack of vermin is still very bad.
Hop Conditions in England.
Tho Maidstone South Eastern Ga
zette, July 10: Tho hops do not
seem to havo benefited so much ns
was anticipated from tho recent
heavy rains. Tho days havo been
hot, but cold winds havo prevailed
at night, and tho progress of the
plant In some places has been check
ed by frost, a romarkablo fact, con
sidering that wo are now In July
The blight continues, repeated wash
ings havo failed to get rid of It.
Mould has also appeared In places
In the Borough, prices remain nom
inally unaltered, holders being un
willing to name n quotation, owing
to tho extremely unfavorable reports
from the gardens, both In this coun-
try and on tho Continent, but the
tono of tho market remains very
strong, and In tho event of tho crop
proving ns short as is at present e.v
pected, very high prices are likely
to bo realized.
Canterbury and District. Al
though tho rainfall of a week ago
was beneficial, tho boisterous gale
of Juno 29th did considerable dam
age and the reports aro generally
satisfactory. During tho week there"
have been two frosts, and cold north
easterly winds havo prevailed' at
nights. Washing Is still necessary,
tjio vermin attack continuing very
severe. On much of the acrcago the
bine Is very backward, but on a few
of the most suitablo and best culti
vated lands tho plant Is looking fair
ly well. Only about a half of an
avorago yield Is anticipated.
Maidstono and District. The hops
havo mado only moderate progress
during tho past-week. Tho blight
continues, necessitating continued
washing and spots of mould nro to
be seen nt plnces.
Worcester. Tho weather during
tho past week In tho Worcester dis
trict has been very favorablo to tho
growth of tho plant, but tho blight
continues almost as bad as ever and
washing has to bo persisted In. This
year's visitation is tho worst within
memory. Tho well washed planta
tions present a fairly favorablo ap
pearance, but tho others go from bad
to worse and In a number of them
there' will bo practically nothing to
pick.
Hops in Washington.
Tho Yakima Republlc: Probably
moro hops aro contracted for this
year than in many years in tho Yaki
ma valley. It is estimated that at
least two-thirds of tho crop of 190C
In Yakima has boon sold on contract
at prices ranging from 10 cents up
A few contracts havo been made at
9 conts. Thoro nro a number of old
contracts made In years, past that
run as high as 15 cents.

If so, it will interest you to
know that it can be stopped
with Dr. Miles' Anti-Pain Pills;
and without any bad after
effects, and this without dan
ger of forming a drug habit or
having your stomach disar
ranged. They positively con
tain no opium, morphine, co
caine, chloral, ether or chloro
form in any form. Dr. Miles'
Anti-Pain Pills relieve pain,
and leave only a sense of relief.
The reason for this is explained '
by the fact that headache comes
from tired, irritable, turbulent,
over-taxed brain nerves. Anti
Pain Pills soothe and strcngth
en'these nerves, thus removing
the cause. They are harmless
when taken as directed.
"Wo uso Dr. Miles' Antl-Pnln Pills
