sign J. X. TIernan, Shipmate William
Buckley and! E. J. Dallahan.
Tho Slocum left Howard street
whanf at 8:20 a. m., having on board
tho committees and comrades and) the
ladies of George II. Thomas post, G.
A. R., headed for tho sea. Off Point
Bonita a heavy ground swell was met
and 'within a few momonts Commodore
Nerncy saw several of tho many ladies
under his charge flying signals of dis
tress in tho form of handkerchiefs
pressed against 'whitening lips. The
commodore regretted having to change
his ordors, but chivalry compelled, and
he passed tho word to the captain to
stand in under the point. Tho courso
was changed until moro quiet water
was reached.
After selections from the marine
band from tho United States naval
training station at Verba. Biiona, Flebt

Captain J. M. Floyd, of Phelps

sung: there was another selection by

ered an eloquent eulogy on the lato

clared to havo been "a true friend and

Prayor was recited, Fleet Chaplain
Wisker leading, after which the tug
steamed for the Presidio wharf, to per
mit those on board to take part in the
cct.cmonios at the National cometery.
Commodore Nernoy was in Los An
geles on Sunday, when ho was advised
by wire that ho was in chargo of the
arrangomonts. Ho arrived hero on
Monday, saw Major Devol, who readily
granted tho tug, and the commnndant
at Yerba Buona willingly sent tho
band.
