place ahead of tho other. It ia only
that tho next five or ten years may
leave tho schooled and lettered one far
ahead of the early beginner in life.
Logically, tho ono -nho has learned
more of the world than of himself will
have tho early advantages; tho one
knowing himself, however, will not he
so long in taking unto his needs this
post-graduate degree of world condi
tions. At the name time it is an undis
puted ' fact that thousands of young
men out of academic training and Be
ginning tho world, find themselves need
lessly hampered in progress through
having taken too much of life for
granted.
What if tho young man in his school
atmosphere attempts to learn his moods,
foibles, weaknesses and strengths! He
can know them only through compari
sons, and these objects of comparisons
will be scboolboyel He may be quite
as well equipped as any other young
roan on his horizon, yot in he busi
ness world he finds himself frequently
in competition with that other type of
young man who knows little else but
tho world and the world's way and who
for the purposes of. the basiaess man in
need of assistance immeasurably is the
school man's superior ior the work in
hand.
Blindly speaking, there Is a littlo too
much of the ideal taught and preached
and prated oracularly from the plat
form to leave to the young man who is
listening to it a clear idea of the actual
world conditions which are outside the
church and school and teeturo hall Un
less he shall adjust his perspectives for'
htauelf in preparation he may find such
keea disappointment in masy things tu
threaten his progress ia life.
I once knew a young man, strong of
frame, positive in temperament, honest
la every thought ad action and nerved
to the expression of his convictions at
any time and in any place. He knew
himself, but he did not know the korld
as he might have known it. Wherever
he had found carjy opportunity for the
expression of his penjsality he bad
made that personality felt. But it
chanced that in the beginning of his
business life this young man's hoaesty
and forcefnlaesa appealed t a bod
utM man at the head of a great iatlto
lies in which graft had. feud root and
flourished. This young nan was given
a nsm is which, throaah the exerciM
hi "WC4 kosfetr! BaAlstkUg
personal courage, tho employer hoped
to root out the crookedness wMch he
felt certain existed.
With a little moro knowledgo of the
world anrl men of all types, this young
adventurer 'into commercial reform
might have accomplished much for
himself and moro for his employer. But
out of his ignorance he drew his rigid
lines so rigidly and so deeply and keen
ly penetrated into conditions existing
in tho organization that tho organiza
Hon itself could not stand theso probes
and strictures! Tho result was that tho
young mani himself became tho victim
of his own hones. convictions carried
out to tho full In the supposed best in
terests of his employers.
This is nn example of fact with no
purpose to prove that business life is
all badl Rather it is used to Indicate
just where academies fall short of con
ditions in n world of sharp competition
Good and bad are comparative only, ami
until the linos nro adjusted sanely hot
ween them, neither of tho terms has
much meaning.
Broadly speaking, tho child which is
not left to tho joltings of the child
world, and the youth who is kept from
the millings and competitions of others
of his own ago belong to tho unfortun
ate. In the same measure tho young
man and tho young woman who have
preached to them only idealized philos
ophies which should) exist in life and
which may not may bo sorlousJr em
barrassed or oven permanently crippled
by reason of false teachings.
Tho keynoto of tho wholo civilized
community life is found in tho one
word. Concession. Tho idealist cannot
even walk through tho business world
without obstructing traffic If ever ho
U able to do so, the wholo mechanism
of commerce and industry will have
simplified until business acumen will bo
a lost nrt.' Out of economic conditions
tho young man should preparo to make
his grudging concessions in business
life. He should bo so fortified as not
to bo shocked) at world conditl6ns. He
should bo entrenched in right thinking
and the principles of right living as to
have his "dead, lino" drawn sharply
short of wrong. But between tho Hms
of active good and oven dormant wrong
there is such a wldo field for business
concesions that tho buslnes man who
fights o"hly irr this field may finish in
fair favor.

Why Nurse Doesn't nold Job Long.
Carefully gathered statistics appear
to show that the marrybgest of all
women aro trained nurses. Thbugfl
complete figures havo not as yet been
compiled, from a considerable mass of
data tho conduilon is drawn that
nine out of ten trained curses marry
during the first seven years of their
occupation as eueh.
When a pretty young woman spoaka
of dtovoting her life to the self-denying
profession of a trained nurse sho is
using, perhaps unconsciously, a mere
figure of speech. Statistics show that
she has an even chance of being mar
ried within four and a half years and
that the has one chance in eight of be
coming the wife of a physician. The
chances are fiver to ono that within ten
years she will marry; one of her pa
tients.
The importance of these figures from
the viewpoint of the sociologist is ob
viously great. Pretty young women in
steadily increasing numbers are enter
ing tho field in question in which
there seems always to be plenty of
room for fresh recruits, who are re
quired to fill the plaece of those who
get married and pass out of the pro-
Ifession forever. Thus, owing to the
causes suggested, it is rare indeed to
discover & trained nurse who has been
in the business ft much a ten years.
