Fails to Make Good on
Its Contract
Governor Chamberlain announced
yesterday nfternoon that the Portland
Airtight Slovo Manufacturing Com
pany had 'failed to comply with tho
torms of their agreement in bidding for
fho labor of tho convicts at tho peni
tentiary, and that thoreforo 'thoj' would
bo compelled to forfeit their $500 cosh
deposit. When bids were called for
several weeks ago this company pnt in
a bid of CS cents per day, nnd agreed to
employ at least 100 convicts for a term
of ten years. They suffered heavily,
however, by tho loss of tholr plant in
Portlnnd, by firo a fow days ngo, and
do not now feel ablo to undcrtako the
work at tho pcnitontlary.
Tho governor will now endeavor to
mako arrangements with tho Lowcn
berg & Going Co., tho present operators
of tho foundry, to continuo to operate
tho foundry and employ tho convicts,
until other arrangements can be mado.
This company has only boon paying
tho sum of iVj cents per hour, but tho
govornor will mako no contract for
loss than 5 cents, and, if necessary,
will put in operation tho theory of
"farming out."
