At'tho end of tlirco wookB after
ilndkB. nro hatched, tlio lion can be
tnkijn away unless tho weather 19 very
cold, in which case leave, hor for sm
other week. Never givo ducks Intend
ed for eating, tlio ritnge; it toughens
and prevents them from fnttcning, but
thoso intended for stock do best when
allowed plonty of room to roam In af
ter they are six weeks old, to insure
strength and growth. Young ducks
must starve during the first twenty
four hours of their existence, says n
writer in Pearson's Magazine for
May.
Tor tho first week their bill of fare
is as follews: Half a pint -of rolled
oats; cracked wheat or stale bread
crumbs; two hardboiled eggs chopped
fine; hnlf a cup of coarse sand mois
tened with scalded milk. Peed four
times a day as much as they will eat
in 10 minutes.
Second and third weeks: Hnlf a
pound of ground oats, the sainc of
wheat bran, u quarter of a pint of
corn-meal, tho sumo of coarse sand,
two tablcspoonfuls of beef-meal, a pint
of finely cut green clovor, rye, or cab
bage moistened with scalded milk,
h'eed four times a day
Pour to six weeks: Boil a qunrt of
hulled oats for an hour, a Ad one pint
of fine grit, tlio same of beef scraps,
0110 quart of clover, or any green food.
Feed four times per diem.
Six to ten weeks: One quart corn
meal, 0110 pint wheat bran, a pint of
boiled oats, pint of beef sernps, half
of grit, tablespoonful of charcoal, pint
of clover. Feed three times a day
then they should bo ready to kill.
Those to be kept for stock have the
same rations until three weeks old;
then thoy aro given equal parts of
ground feed and bran moistened with
milk, or water. Feed twice a dav, if
on free range; if yurdoil, add half a
cup of beef scraps, cut clover, or veg
etables to double tlio qunnity of grain.
Young ducks are very nervous and
will not forget a scare for weeks. You
can porsundo them to go in any direc
tion if you work slowly mid quietly.
Hurry excites them, mid they will rnsh
shrieking in evory direction except the
one you would have them go. Don't
allow anyone to run them, for it will
put them bank from one to two weeks
mid waste just that amount of feed.
This is a point on which posit ivo and
repeated demonstration enables me to
speak with special authority.
One Hummer wo had a yard of
youngsters almost rondy for market,
when a friend enino down to spend
Sunday witli us, bringing a young fox
terrier with her, to give him a day's
exercise in tho country. Our own
dogs are taught to take their exercise
in the woods, but Mr. City Terrier
evidently found it slow, for during
dinner there was a grout clamor. On
a poultry and pet Btoek farm if one
bird or animal sounds the noto of
alarm everything joins in, mid there
is a conglomeration of poa fowl, guinot
fowl, hens, ducks, goose and dogs all
shrieking in fright and in different
keys.
We laid down our knives and forks,
looked at oach other in horror, rushed
wildly out to locate tho troublo and
were met by llovor, the bond of my
four footed police, and piloted to the
duck's quarters to find the torrier via-1
itor in the pen of the duokliuga to hisj
great amusement and their detraction.!
Needless to say that was the oud of
his day's healthy oxurcitso; bo was
securely locked up until it was timo to
go home. It took nil tho motherly
days, and it was fully two weoks be
fore they got back to weight. With '
the old ducks there Is the danger of
their rupturing an egg, which is sure
to cause trouble, perhaps death, or J
of breaking a log, which means killing, j
When they have to be handled to

litis u gate at one end, which Is placed
