President Alderman Installed.
Churlotteavillo, Vn., April 13. In tho
presonco of many distinguished educa
tors, roprosonting nearly all tho prom
inent institutions of learning in the
country, Edwin A. Alderman, former
presidont of Tulano University, was to
day inaugurated aa first prosidont of
tho University of Virginia. It was ono
of tho most notable occasions in tho
history of tho university since its foun
dation by Thomas Jcfforeoifc-. Tho in
augural ceremonies proper woro preced
ed by a parade of faculty, alumni,
trustees and visiting educators, all
garbed in classic cap nnd gown. The
ccreinouies were opened with prayer,
followed by addresses on behalf of tho
trustees. Tho inaugural address of
President Alderman was followed by
congratulatory addressos on behalf of
the faculty, student body, alumni and
1 the various institutions of learning
represented among tho visitors.

ent of the Qoldsboro (N. C.) schools,
and from 1889 to 1802 was assistant
state superintendent of North Carolina,
a position which ho filled with much
credit to himself. Early in 1802 ho
was chosen professor of English in the
. North Carolina Normal College, and
in the fall of tho same year was elected
professor of pedagogy in the University
of North Carolina. In 1896 he was
wade president of the same college,
and in 1900 he assumed the presidency
of Tulano University at New Orleans,
which position he continued to fill un
til chosen to the presidency of the
Vniveraity of Virginia.
