Sheriff Culver's office has been a
busy scono sinco last Thursday noon
when tho tax roll, which had been
made up by County Clork Roland, was
turned over to him for collection. Tho
amount of the taxes of all tho property
in tho wholo county is given, in this
roll nnd tho ofllco hns been fairly del
uged with mail from noa-residonts, in
quiring tho amount of tho tax on their
proporty. Sinco tho roll was openod
tho ofllco has issued 212 receipts and
has taken in between $9000 and $10,
000. Throo deputies have been em
ployed to hnndlo tho work and tho
forco will bo increased later.
Under tho prcsont law thero is a
system of rebnto and penalties which
aid tho sheriff in the speedy collection
of taxes. If a person pays nil of his
taxes betweon tho dato of tho opening
of tho books and March 15, 1905, ho
is ontltlod to throo por cont. rebnto on
tho amount of his tax. If ho only pays
half of his taxes beforo tho first Mon
day in April, ho has until tho first Mon
day in October to pay tho balanco
without being penalized, but if no pnrt
of tho taxes nro paid boforo tho first
Monday in April thoro is a ponalty of
10 per cont. imposed nnd tho taxes draw
interest at tho rate of 12 per cent, un
til paid.

Tho sonato has already passed a bill
to apppropriato $45,000 to sottlo tho
balanco of tho claims of tho votornns of
tho Oregon Indian wars of 1855-0, nnd
thoro is littlo likelihood of tho houso
fulling to concur in the moasuro. Tho
last legislature appropriated $100,000
for tho reliof of those votorans, but
legal claims in excess of this amount
wcro filed, and it is to meet this defi
ciency that tho additional appropria
tion is asked for.
