For once the small boy is happy,
likewise tho small girl. For tho first
timo in three years Salem, has a real,
rousing snow storm. All day yester
day tho snow foil, and by night tho
ground was covered with a thick, coat
ing of it.- Down town tho peeplo went
wild, at least somo of thom did. Tho
clerks along Commercial street got
right out in in it, and tho passersby
suffored from tho attack. Staid busi
noss mon stopped long enough to grab
up a handful of snow and throw at
somo unsuspecting fellow, and. thon
snow would fly from all directions.
Although tho .snow mado a groat
mnay pcoplo happy, thero wero somo
who took a pessimistic view of tho sit
uation. "This hero woathor would bo
all right," romarked ono old man from
Iowa, "but this ain't tho right kind
of climate." Just thon a big snow
ball hit him somewhero in tho region of
his mouth, and what moro might have
followod was drowned in snow.
Tho streets took on quito an Eastern
look, and it is a real novelty to seo tho
contrivances which aro usod in lieu of
sleighs and cutters. Wheels aro re
moved from buggies, and in thoir stead
aro socured homo mado runners, while
a fow real cutters, jingling with sleigh
bolls, dash up and down tho streets,
while tho small boy tugged along with
his littlo sled hauling his girl home
from school.
Last evening coasting waa in order,
and soverai parties went to tho differ
ent hills in the suburban part of town,
and Bpent n jolly evening. Tho best
placo for this was in Fairmount Park,
where thoro was a long straight slide,
and tho sleds bobbed up and down and
over, with scarcoly a mishap. Soniet-
times, howover, tho sled would hit a
bump, and tho occupants would turn
bio off in tho snow in a manner moro
ludicrous than becoming. But every
thing goes in coasting. Coasting is a
novelty hero, and is tho most oxhllirat-
ing sport. When you start down the
hill tho fooling which creeps over yon
is indescribable, and before you can
define it you nro lying in a heap of
snow at tho bottom.
This morning tho snow was still on,
and ovon botter: Tho small boy didn't
hnvo to bo called twice today. Ho was
up with tho birds, and out on tho walk
boforo breakfast. Fathers and moth
ers scolded in vain. "Hurrah for tho
snow. ' '
Tho stroot car servico of tho city
was in a badly demoralized condition
this morning, many of tho cars ran bo
hind timo, nnd somo wero unnblo to
porform thoir usual runs for several
hours.
This morning tho walks wero slip
pery from tho long coasting, and it was
indeed a funny sight to seo tho pooplo
on their way to work vainly trying to
keep their feet. Sedate school ma'ms la
bored and tugged up tho walks holding
to tho fence to koep straight. Tho poo
plo who "just hatod snow" waitod in
vain for a car, and had to start out
afoot, under tho closo protection of an
umbrolla. Dignified young ladies wero
caught on corners and had thoir facos
washed by somo "audacious young
man," who, in somo instances wero
surprised to find how much color tho
girl hnd left, but no ono got mad, and
all joinod in the sport.
Tho weather report says, "Friday,
and Saturday, rain or snow,"
and all tho young people yes,
and ovon somo of tho older ones aro
wishing that it would bo snow. Any
way, January 12th will bo remembered
as a truly big snow storm.

of tho night, returned a vcrdit for tho
plnintiff in tho sum of $720.

criminal matters this morning, among
which was tho caso of John Wndkins,
who was arrested on tho chargo of
selling liquor without a license nnd
selling liquor to a minor. Ho pleaded
guilty to both charges and fined $300
on tho first chargo and given six
months in tho county jnil on tho last.
Thero wero peculiar circumstances con
nected with this caso, nnd tho action
of tho defendant very probably caused
his sentence to bo a groat deal moro
sovoro than it otherwiso would hnvo
been. Tho facts of tho matter wero
that five witnesses wero on tho list and
subpoonaes mado out for thom, but,
thoy all residing in Tumor, and Wad
kins claimiug to tho officers nil tho
timo that ho would plead guilty, it was
thought unnecessary to servo thom un
til yesterday. At tho last moment,
when it would bo oxtromoly hard, so
ho thought, to get tho witnesses against
him, Wndkins apparently changod his
mind and announced his intention to
plead not guilty. Shcrift Culver imme
diately wont to Turner to securo his
witnesses, but, although it was snowing
ut the timo, all theso gentlemen seemed
to hnvo found somo business that called
them away from homo, and, strange as
it may Hccm, no ono know whero thoy
were, tho Bncrm is not a man to do
outwitted, and ho soon had sworn in
two doputios, and Btnrtod out into tho
blinding snow storm in search of wit
nesses. After a iinrd search all day
he succeeded in rounding up two, and
tho rest came in of thoir own accord
this morning. They woro unnecessary,
for tho testimony of the two aocurod
by the sheriff would havo convicted tho
prisoner.
Carl Long, who was arrostod on tho
chargo of assault with a dangerous
weapon, and convicted by tho jury of
assault and battery, was up for sen
tence this morning, and got four
months in tho county jail.
William Martin, who was tried .for
forgery and ncquittcd on tho ground
of insanity, was this morning ordorod,
by Judgo Burnott, committed to tho
asylum.

creasing attondnnco, for future needs,
