Miss Alta Savago, employed as a teacher in tho seventh grade of tlio public school of this city, committed suicidcthis morn ing by swallowing n large tjuautity of carbolic acid. Tho young lady arose at her usual time this morning and atp breakfast with tho family of her uncle, Dr. E. L. Kctchum, whero sho boarded. About 8 o'clock sho went to her room, and with in a fow minutes was discovered suffer ing from tho offects of the poison. Tho best of medical attontlou was afford ed tho unfortunate girl, but sho died within half an hour. Sho passed away peacefully, and was unconscious from tho time that sho was found until tho end came. Inquiry from her 'friends about town discloses tho fact that for several days deceased scorned worried, and appeared to bo downcast. Littlo attention was paid to this, however, as it was thought that sho was busy with her school work. This morning sho nppearod to bo in lower spirits, but did not complain. Sho had taught in tho independence school for just one wcok and two days and had many friends. Savage, of this city, and was a popular society girl. Sho was graduated from tho Salem public schools in tho class of June, 11)01, nud was attending the Stato Normal School at Monmouth when sho was elected to tho position in Independence. Tho sad news of her death caused a shock to her many friends in this city, who could hnrdly realizo that ono of hor bright dispo sition dould commit such a rash act. They were loath to bolievo tho report and awaited its confirmation from In dependence. Her whole life had been ono of purity and gentleness, nnd tho only cnuso that can be assigned for tho deed is tho breaking down of her mon tul forces, caused by over study, as sho was u constant worker. Deceased was a member of tho First Presbyterian church, of this city, nnd tho funeral will be held from that church on Sun day, and tho remains taken to Mac leay for interment.
