Ross took tho lend, but the water was so swift that ho warned Landon to keep further up stream, as there were some deep holes below. Evidently Landon failed to comply with the advice, for ho was swept by tho current into n deep hole. Almost at tho samo time Ross lost his footing and slipped into deep wafer. Ross quickly gained the main shore and held out his 'fishing polo toward Landon, who wns swim ming toward him. Suddenly tho young man sank just as ho reached for tho polo. Ross endeav ored to locate his companion, but tho current was so swift that ho could do nothing nlonc.
