Owing to Baker's peculiar situation It
Is not believed that tho public senti

INDIAN
SCHOOL
Superintendent Potter Tend
ers His KPSignatnn
to Department
Superintendent T. W. Potter, of the
Chemawa Indian schcol, has tendered
his resignation, to take effect when his
successor Is appointed, and In the fu
ture will devote hh time to looking af
ter his private business Interests In
Washington and Oklahoma.
Tho people " of Salem and the
patrons of the Indian school appreci
ate tho splendid work accomplished
for the school during the past nine
years by Mr. Potter, and they are sor
ry to lose him, not only as superlnr
tendont of the school, but as a citizen.
He has been engaged in the work
among the Indians for the past 18
years, and Is considered one of the
best men I id tho service. Owbg to
some trouble with the department a
few months ago, an Investigation was
ordered, but the Inspectors'-report ful
ly vindicated the action of Mr. Potter j
In every respect, anil his resfgna'lon i
Is not In any way connected with that j
episode. I
Early last spring Mr. Potter con
cluded to tender his resignation, oi ac
count of the press of private business,
occasioned by the serious Illness of
his partner in Washington, but about
the time the letter was prepared! and
ready to be sent to the department,
the investigation was ordered, and he
could not well quit the service In dis
grace, all owing to the matter coming
up at that time. j
The school, under his care, has In
creased wonderfully, and today Is one
of tho best In the United States, if
not at the top rank.
Ir. Potter, in an interview with The
Journal this morning, said that he was
sorry to leavo Salem' and1 the school,
as his whole heart was In the Institu
tion, but it was absolutely necessary
for him to do so, In order to protect
his private Interests.
