The official weather and crop re
port for the week says:
During the past week the rainfall
In the eastern sections of the state
has been ample, and In somo limited
areas It has been oxcesslvo and at
tended by high winds and hail, which
have done considerable damage to the
ciops lying within the tracks of
these storms. In the western section
of the state draught continues, and no
rain of consequence has occurred
slnco June 2d, except in some of the
coast counties, and in the high level
sections of southern Oregon, where
local rains havo fallen, and greatly
Improved late crops.
Fall wheat Is filling nicely, and Its
harvest will become genoral this
week., Fall barley Is also maturing
and promises to yield above the av
erage. Early sown grain is ripening
and a fair crop will bo harvested.
Lato sown spring wheat In the Wil
lamette valley Is very poor; somo of
It has already been cut for hay and
some will not pay to cut even for
this purpose Good rains within the
next few days will holp some fields
of lato sown spring wheat, but most
of It Is too far advanced to bo bone
fitted, and this part of the wheat
ciop, which, fortunately, comprises
but a small proportion of the whole.

average are expected. Corn is doing
fairly well. Pasturago is drying up.
Stock generally keep in good condi
tion, but there Is a falling off In tlio

excellent condition.
Hops, potatoes and gardens are
uneven; where rain has fallen they
aro doing well; where drought pre
vails they aro from poor to good, do
pending upon their cultivation, and
the capacity of tho soil for retaining
moisture.
Peachos aro beginning to get ripe,
and a fair crop will be picked. The
chorry season Is drawing to a close,
and tho yields were much bettor than
expected.
Yield Will Not Be Over Thirty
Per cent in State
Lack of rain has severely damaged
Oregon's pruno crop. From every dls
trlct bad yields are reported, and In
places there will bo no yield. It is
estimated that tho complete yiold of
Oregon will bo only 30 per cent of an
average crop. All of this Is duo to
the dry season Just at tho time when
a little rain was needed.
Other fruits aro doing . well, and
tho crop will bo fair at any rate, Ap
ples and peaches are in good condl
tlon nearly every place In the state.
Wlbur K. Newell, of Dllley, Comis
sloner of tho first district, particular
ly reported the effect of the dry weath
er upon the crops. Hd estimates tho
prune crop for his district at 1,500,000
iiuuuus, auoui av per cent, or mo nor
mal yield. Strawberries and cherrle's
produced well. Tho apple crop is
light, but the fruit is free from scab
and is therefore of better grade than
for several years past. Grapes were
nipped by a frost, but, generally
speaking, promise well.
A. H. Carsons, of Grant's Pass,
commissioner of tho third district, re
ported that tho yield of Italian prunes
would bo about 20 per cent of tho
normal crop, but that French prunes
would show about 50 per cent. The
apples In his district are strictly up
to grade, with a full yield. Peaches
are also down for a 100 per sent yield.
Apples, peaches, cherries, plums
and prunes In tho fourth district, re
ported on by Commissioner R. H.
Weber, of Tho Dalles, range In yield
from 75 to 90 per cent of a normal
crop. The small fruits aro oven bet
ter. This year thero has been more
spraying for tho codlin moth, and as
a consequence there will be fowor
worms In tho apples marketed.
In Union and adjacent counties
the pruno crop Is fair, reported Judgo
Geer, of Covq, commissioner of the
fifth district. Frost killed tho chert
rles in a few localities. Pears and
plums show a good crop. The straw
berry crop was excollent, but lower
prices than formerly prevailed. No
report was mado from the second dls
trict.
