year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. F. J.
Frary, was accidentally shot yester
day, and tho chances seem to be
against his recovery.
W. L. Haines, a locnl butcher, was
In the act of shooting a fractious
steer, when a sudden movement of
tho animal caused him to step back
ward and slip down a small embank
ment. As ho did so the rifle was
turned In tho direction of tho boy and
discharged, tho ball entering his left
side In front between tho ribs and
hip, and passing backward through
his body. Tho gun was n 30-callbre
Winchester, and tho soft-polnted bul
let made a frightful wound.

Surveyors on North Santiam
River Shows an immense
Force
Eugene, Or., July 13.-Professor Mc
Allister and his party, who returned a
fpu- .lavs azo from a-trip up the San-
tlam- river, where they have been
making a topographical survey, found
an abundance of water power there.
They began at a point 22 miles above
Mill City and surveyed down to tnat
place. In their measurements of the
flow of water they found a volume of
22,000 cubic Inches a minute. The
fait In the distance of 22 miles is 900
Mrs. Joseph Lacollo, Ottawa, East, jee or over 40 feet to tho mile.
There .are scarcely any level
stretches, the river being almost a
connected chain of rapids. They found
a great many places at which an enor
mous water power could be obtained
by constructing dams across the
stream, which could be readily dono.
At Niagara such a work was under
taken, but never completed. A fall
of 60 feet Is secured at that place in
that manner.
