PIVE LIBERTY OREGON NATIONAL GUARDS MOTOR LINE DAILY CAPITAL JOURNAL -8ALBM, OREGON, 8ATURDAY, JULY 2, 1904. prge Meeting to Dis cuss the Propo sition Line May Be Extended to Liberty and Possibly on to Rosedale I'frjflH-There was a larce attendance of 'fliBi , j ..!. n t. T II. AlUlUlb U11U 11U1L JlUtWia Ub tUW JJ1U- Srty meeting Friday evening to dis cuss the construction of an electric motor line. A number of prominent Salemltes were present, and there was LSr connrn.1 iHsotiRnlnn nf the nlan stlb- Tflfinltted by Manager Welch, of the CItl- eon's Light & Traction Company. He estimated the cost of track and eauip- ment to Rosedale, 4V miles, at ?S0,- ;' (3bo, and cost of operation ?4000 a year. $ ufH,s company would! put up $16,000 and Wltin nannln wf. wAnt Mia lino wnlllrl lio ytwwcpected to put up the balance. As a result of the discussion there as a motion adopted to appoint a Committee of three from Salem, two from Liberty and two from Rosedale o raise tho subsidy. Encouraging Speeches were made by Mr. Ward, L. Si. Gilbert, Captain Smith, J. G. Gra- am, F. N. Derby, J. M. Kyle, J. L. tockton, Mr. West, of Rosedale and E. Hofer. It was the unanimous sen timent of the speakers that a motor lino would be a grani step for both city and county. The Idea was brought out that tho Increase In the value of the land along the line on both sides of the road (would alone raise the subsidy re quired. At the rate of two dollars per acre for the land benefitted, and if only half paid, thore would be enough with what could bo raised In Salem to make tho extension possible. Mayor Waters presided at tho meet ing, and spoke In the most encourag ing manner of tho prospects of such an extension. His recent acquisition of the 500-acre tract for suburban homos shows the way tho wind Is blowing, and tho first milo of the extension would In Itself bo profitable from tho business standpoint. If tho city Is ev er to use hroken rock on the streots, that material could bo hauled from the rockplt more cheaply and distrib uted on the streets of Salem better than In any other manner.
