Hemonway, of Indiana, this afternoon
mado tho following statement, which
Is believed to bo semi-official "Fair
banks will accept the nomination, pro
vided it Is tendered1 to him. He will
not do anything calculated to indi
cate that he da seeking It." In this
connection it Is said by friends of the
administration that the program is to
allow the matter to rest until Sunday
awaiting tho arrival of other persons,
when tho delegates representing the
administration will call on Fairbanks,
and offer hi mthelr support for tho
nomination, and that Fairbanks will

by tho Greater Salem Commercial
Club, favoring tho acquisition of a
municipal lighting plant, there 'has
been nothing else talked of a public
nature among tho business men. of
this city.
This office has been overrun with
callers expressing approval of the un
dertaking, and it seema to be very
popular with all classes of people.
Several anonymous communications
havo been1 received but cannot be
printed, as It Is only fair to lot every
one show his handi, and stand square
ly. Since the subject of public owner
ship of a lighting plant is being agi
tated It becomes a matter that the
people of our city aro not only Inter
ested In but are in duty bound in their
own Interest to give It their unprej
udiced thought. It is not a new sub
ject, and it is certainly a debatable

from tho side of the people, and then
