Last evening In tho University gym
nasium, tho young ladles of tho phys
ical culture department gave an exhi
bition, which was wltnossed by about
400 people. TI1I9 Is tho first time tho
department hns appeared In the com
mencement exorcises,, and It was much
enjoyed by those who wore fortuunto
enough to bo present. Tho work
dono was very artistic. Tho director
Is Miss Ruby Pholps. The "wand
drill" by tho class was very good.
Miss Edyth Randall gave some artis
tic club swinging. Sho Is making a
specialty of this work, and also of(hla life. Sheriff-elect B. L. White
physical culture, and, from her work
last evening, shows tho great profi
ciency sho has accomplished. Miss
Mao Pholps and Miss Jonnle Coyle
were contestants In an exciting "po
tato race," In which Miss Coylo was
the victor. Tho game of battle ball
wa9 played between two picked teams
the "Cardinals" and "Old Golds," In
which tho "Old Golds" won vvith a

afternoon. Tho patient has a suicidal

Linn County Horse Thieves.
Elmer 03burn and Victor Howard,
two young men, were arrested near
Lebanon yesterday afternoon on thq
charge of stealing tho saddle horses
of Earl Carlton and Fred Bllyeu, found
la their possession. It Is also said
they stole a watch of C. H. Whitney,
found on Osburn, and many other per
sonal things from different placo3.
They wore examined, held for tho cir
cuit court, and this afternoon, In de
fault of ball, placed In tho county
jail. They formerly resided hero, go
ing back to Kentucky, from whence
they are said to have been driven,

Sheriff Colbath served a complaint
and summons on Thomas J. Gibson,
who Is serving a Hfo sentonco for mur
der, committed about one year ago.
Tho suit was commouced in Lane
county, where the wife is now a resi
dent. Max Hymen, of Astoria, sued his
wife, Rosa, for a dlvqrco over In Se
attle, but the judge had read about
the trouble that tho Hymen family
had caused during tho last hundred
centuries, and refused to grant tho
tho petition. "It Is a long lano that
hais no turn.
Tho traveling "carnival" Is doing
the valley towns, and tho peoplo will
