San Francisco, April 21. Selmln
Inaoka 1b a young Japanese who has
lately come to America to finish his
education. He belongs to a good
family and has had advantages of
the best schools In his own country.
He arrived hero too late to enter
Columbia university this spring, but
vrlll do so the coming fall.
Though exceedingly young, he is
Intensely patriotic, and has spent
much time in ascertaining Just how
the Americans feel towards his coun
trymen- One thing ho has learned is
that there is an erroneous impression
here in regard to the ladles of that
country, the tendency being to con
fuse them with the class known as
elsha. He has written the following
rtlcle giving the history of the lat
er class and defining them as sepa-
ate and apart from the gentlewomen
f that land:
Several hundred years ago there
ere a few girls of peculiar profession
,ho were called Shlrabyoshl In Japan.
he occupied high ranks and position
a society, xnoir professions were
o dance and sing, mainly employed
y royal courts or wealthy families
o enjoy them, as their charges" were
eit. They lived In the cities where
mperors lived.
At that time they were nobly char-
cterlzed and well educated, and their
rts were so difficult that unless edu-
ated in these arts' they could not
ecomo shlrabyoshl. But as the years
assed, they gradually degenerated
their characters and In social ranks.
hen they began to be ashlrabyoshi
Ithout education, having no arts,
ind the only element that entitled
era to bo called shlrabyoshl was the
eautlfulness of their faces.
We have got no record since when
ielr names were changed into Gel-
a. I think it was 100 years ago.
I venture to say that the main cause
their degeneration was duo to the
eaeeful reign of tho Tokugawa dyn-
ties of about six centuries. During
is time Dalmyos had nothing to do,

searched for their enjoyments, and
the shlrabyoshl became one of their
sacrifices. Demand for them was so
great and becaiuo of difficulties of
their arts compelled them to take In
uneducated, low character, and satis
fled by the beautlfulness of faces only.
HIthertofore they wero selected from
Samurai families, but at this time
many of theml were picked out from
Chonlns, who were tho lowest class
and utterly Ignorant. A few years
ago, It was tho climax of the Geisha.
Now, tho Golsha's professions are
to dance and sing. They are selected
from poor families who cannot sup
port themselves without getting some
money by sacrificing their daughters.
There are few occupations for an un
educated girl in Japan. Compelled
by their poverty they search for this
costly choice, because by this they

abyoshl In singing wero Koto and
Tsuzuml, which were used by nobles
only. Geishas uso Teuzuml and Sa-
mlsen, which are used by a kind of
beggars at present, regarded humble.
Shlrabyoshl was dressed like a
princess or a noble. A Geisha's dress
is different In Its form, especially in
lt3 color, from that of a lady, and If
lady puts on such a dross she will
bo thrown out from her society and
sneered at as a Geisha.
Geishas, In their present condition,
should be called a toy of a wealthy,
dissolute people. They are employed
by such kind of man only, Just as a
wealthy European plays cards. They
form a society by themselves, but
never permitted to enter into that of
ladles. They are also rejected to ap
pear before a gentleman or a Indy.
There are many thousands of Geishas
scattered In all cities.
Now, It Is a great phenomenon thnt
they are steadily decreasing In num
ber. Social reformers are eager to
prohibit their existence by law, but
Japan Is too busy to pay attention to
them.
Almost all foreigners had mixed up
a Geisha and a Japanese lady. In
fact, it Is not easy to distinguish
them, as Jnpanese ladles seldom
come out from their gates. They oft
en introduce to their people a Geisha
as a type of Japanese woman.
