LUMBER RATES RESTORED.
Tho long-dlstnnco trafllc managers
t tho Ilnrrlman lines have come to
their senses nnd restored tho old hint
bor u.tos for Interior Oregon snw
-mills.
1 Tho news was first published In,
Tbo Journal, this paper having kept
In very closo touch with tho shlppors
and tho trulllo managors throughout
tho wholo controversy.
Great credit Is duo tho Grontor Sa
lem Commercial Club and Its able sec
rotary, of this city J. G. Graham, for
tho result accomplished In favor of
tho shlppors.
Tho Journal has printed a great
floal of matter on tho subjoct, and,
-while many other so-called news
ivapors wero silent, or defended the
unjust rate, Tho Journal never for a
moment abandoned tho shipping In
terests of our stato.
Conservative positions hnvo won,
nnd tho railroad men at Portland aro
entitled to great credit for the tight
to restore rates.
Under tho old into of $3.10 for com
mon and rough lumber to San Fran
clsno bay points ovory sawmill In
Westom Oregon can run. and make
money.
Traffic Malinger Stubbs caught on
to tho situation at tho right moment
to head off a political campaign that
-would have reunited In Injury to both
the Industries and the railroads.
' Some will say this relief has como
about just on tho eve of a political
i'ttrnpalgn. to provont electing a hos
JHo legislature. But such Is not the
caso.
Tho host railroad managers In this
Mate hnvo labored to restore these
rates as an act of justlno to tho In
dustrie of Western Oregon.
Thoy have actod wlsoly, and lu the
A WORD FOR THE DEMOCRATS.
Tho Journal has not the heart to
deride tho Oregon Democrats. They
have put up a good tlckot, and adopt
ed a pretty good platform. On that
flat salary business, they have got
rather the best of the Republicans,
and if they could back up their dec
larations with deeds It might prove
valuable political assets. But they
aro a small, poorlsh people, as a par
ty, and wo should not bo-too hard on
thorn, nor oxpect too much of them.
Thoy havo an Important duty to per
form as nn opposition party, and have
performed It well. Tho Republicans
have got to get In and make good on
several things. They havo got to pas3
that flat salary bill In spite of h 1
and high wnter, whether they like It
or not. Thoy havo got to reduce their
stato tnx, and hold npproprlatlonr,
dawn to somewhere near tho business
limit. Thoy havo got to get In nnd
build that portage railroad, or go out
of binlnesa In Eastern Oregon. A 20-year-in-tho-futuro
canal will not do,
gontlomon. Tho Journal wishes to bo
modost about suggesting these thlngj.
It would always bo modost. It mildly
suggostcd that Governor Geer bo re
nominated, and that a flat salary law
bo onnctod. Republican managers
Bpat on thoso mild and kindly and
moro or loss Intelligent suggestions,
and followod some superior wisdom
of their own. They lost their gov
ernor, and nio up against It on the
flat salary question. Tho Journal
later urged that Govornor Geer cnll a
spoolal session so that tho $500,000
world's fair bill could bo passed with
out log-rolling as much moro thor
ough on tho strength of that mean lire.
Well, tho fear that somo ono would
or would not bo olected senator pre
vented a special session, and tho
Portland fair bill wont through load
ed with about $500,000 of other Jobs.
Whllo wo aro proud of tho fair, and
willing to "cpugh up" for Portland en
terprise, tho "common people," who
aro only remotely benefitted, had a
right to havo tho hog killed with as
Uttlo other "killings" as possible. Tho
way tho fair Job was finally put
through, has given tho stato tho high
est stato tax In years. When nil the
good advice In tho world Is wasted
and thrown away, thero Is no pso
shedding tears. But no one need
blnmo tho Democrats for making tho
most of tholr opportunities. Tho only
way to got out of the woods Is to send
good business Republicans to tho leg
islature, reduco tho Btato tax, cut off
the big grafts, return sovornl hundred
thousand dollars to tho treasury, If
that canal is not to be built, ask the
balauco of tho Indian War Veterans
to watt a couplo of yoars, and start no
now grafts. In tho meauttino those
Republican and Democratic man
agors, who make a business of kill
ing oft reform bills nnd heaping up
new burdens on tho people, should be
kept at homo.
DETACHABLE FEET.
"That now saloslady," said the
blonde at tho ribbon countor. "has
falso hair and teeth."
"Vos," replied tho brunette who
condescended to sell haudkerchlefs
occasionally, "and It soems that's not
tho only thing. I heard hor complain
that Bho hadn't had a chance to get
off her feet all day." Philadelphia
