wind, Is dot as heavy, as was expect
ed. Tho first damago reported was
tho destruction of tho powor cabla

water company with tho pumping sta
tion, a dlstanco of two blocks. This
shod was blown over and tho cablo
brokon. Tho company was prepared
however, and tho auxiliary cnglnos

A little later a part of thetin roof
on the storo of J. L. Stoclct&n'&' Co,
rolled up and foil with a crasin the
Btreot below, narrowly missing sever
al pedestrians. Fully oile-third of the
building was unroofed, but-by the
prompt recovering of the building-with
tarred paper, damage to tho t large
stock of goods in the storo was
averted.
The tin roof on tho Tumor lock
was also badly damaged, and a part
of It torn away, as was that on the
Thompson block, on State Btreot, the
latter roof bolng carried fully a block
away. Chimneys In all parts tho olty
wero blown down, trees wero" uprooted
and wrecked, and tolepbono, telegraph
and other wires are badly tangled, and
the town was, for a time, in darkness,
but at a late hour Saturday, evening
tho olectrlc lighting system wns.found
to bo In excellent condition, and the
town was llghtod In spite of the se
vere storm.
At tho insano asylum the wind
played havoc. Somo of tho wings of
tho main building wore unroofed, In
part, tho north wing especially suf
fering. Onths latter roof 100 feet was
torn off and blown down, and tho roof
on othor parts of tho building was
badly wrecked. Chimneys on parts of
tho building were blown down and
troos suffered.
The wind storm did some damago In
tho country districts adjacent to Sa
lem. Fences In ovory part of the val
ley have boon thrown down, outhouses
upset, and In sevoral of tho hop yards
noar hore, the buildings that were not
very strongly bUUt were overthrown.
At the'Krebs yard, oight miles north
of this city, two hop housed were
thrown down. These buildings were
old and In bad repair, and tho wind
was not at Its holght beforo they foil,
In tho samo neighborhood another hop
house was destroyed by tho wind, and
in other sections of tho country small
buildings wero dainagod.
A lady driving across tho steel
brldgo In a buggy In tho ovonlng was
Injured. Tho wind overturned her
buggy and threw her out on the
brldgo, but, fortunately, she was
saved from serious hurt.

Hold was wrecked almost Its entire
length.
North Salem. (
Mrs. M. E. Mlnnqr, of North Salwnj
was quite sovqroly hurt ns a result of
tho storm Saturday ovenlng. While
In her back yard sho was caught by
a suddon gust, and carried about six
feet and dropped, alighting astrldb.
