HONOR TO PUBLIC SCHOOL8.
The public school aro splendidly vindicated by somo statistics
gathered at Harvard by President ElloL They tend to show that tho pub
lic school boy Is bettor prepared for college entrance examinations than
tho prlvato school boy and better fitted for his collego work.
In the last collego yonr FEWER PUBLIC SCHOOL BOYS THAN
PRIVATE 8CHOOL BOYS FAILED IN THEIR ENTRANCE EXAMIN
ATIONS at Harvard, and moro of tho formor graduated with honors.
Tho tolographlc summary of the statistics does not tell us whnt pro
portion of Haivard studonts como from other than public preparatory
schools, but probably thoy form the larger portion of tho student body.
Thoso facts ought to bo good reading for parents who Imagine thoy
must send tholr boys to private schools to fit them propely for college.
Of course, tho difference may bo In tho boys rather than In tho two
sots of schools. Ab a rule, tho sons of poor parents do not go to acade
mies and prlvato schools and pay tuition, when thoy can got free pre
paration In the high schools.
AND, AS A RULE, THE BOY WHO IS LACKING IN MATERIAL AD
VANTAGES MAKES THE BETTER STUDENT, not because ho Is
brighter or moro capablo, but becauso ho roallzos early the necessity
of hustling and that he must stand on his own abilities and achieve
monts and not on his fathor's pile.
Vory llkoly the nendomios would do better If they had the public school
material.

HOME FOLK8.
. (By Frank Putnam.)
Oh, Hlley, with your homo folks you've won ray heart ontlro;
I wondor with thorn by tho creek, I Join them nt tho flro.
Thoy do not shamo my shynoss with any worldly show
Tho plain folks, tho kind folks that you havo mado mo know.
7 met thorn and spoke them whon I was a boy,
Hut novor Raw tlio pure gold, only tho nlloy.
For I wns koeii to tako the road that lad toward the Town.
Boyonil the range of purple hlHs to where the sky oame down.
Thorn wero tho great folk, the powerful, the wise;
Wo wore but the tolling bands, they the watchful oyee.
Tho Town's ways wero strange ways, uncivil and unkind;
Grace thoy bad not tho gTace of them I left behind.
For prldo I bldo among them and mako their ways my own;
And In their ork am ono ot them, but in my heart alone.
IIouko hare I and wlfo havo I and babes to boar my namo; ,
I think It llko my fathora house, but It is not the same.
A hunger, doop, unsatisfied, Is urging mo to roam , ,
Tho long road, tho lost road, tho end of which is Home.
' Tho old homo, tho old scenes I long for thoih In vain
Tho dear lurt, tho truo hearts I Bhall not moot again.
Hut nomotlinos, with your folks, I gllmpso tho oldon glow,
And love them, as I novor know I loved thorn long ago.
