AN
AMUSING
BLUNDER
A Russian Story.
During tho rolgn of Catherine II
of Russia, there was, at hor court, ati
exceedingly rich banker who had
beon born In England but who had
mnde Russia his home nnd had sworn
nlleglnnco to the ompress. His name
waB Sudorland nnd not only did he
enjoy a uogltlon of much Influonco at
court, but he had also risen high in
tho favor of the empress.
LIfo had fallen In pleasant placcF
for tho estimable Mr: Suderlaml, bo
pleasant that his surprise and aston
ishment was ovorwholmlng when, one
morning as ho was finishing drossslng,
his Borvant camo, open-mouthed, to
tell him that the houso was surroun
ded by nn armed forco and that the
chief of pollco had asked to speak
with him.
"Gracious "heavens!" gasped tho
banker, while terrible visions of Si
beria Hashed before his bewlldorod
gazo, "What can it mean? I havo
dono nothing."
Ho ontored tho room, whoro Rollcw,
tho chief of pollco, was pacing up nnd
down with troubled face.
"Mr. Sudoland," ho began In a voice
of deeop consternation, "I assuro you
that it is with groatost reluctance that
I am forced to oxecuto a commend
Issued by our gracious sovereign. I
am overwhelmed at tho sevorlty of tho
order and I cannot Imagine what crlmo
you havo committed torrlblo onougli
to ralso Hor Majosty's resentment ta
such a height."
Mr. Sudorland grow palo What
terrible plot was entangling him, an
innocont man, In Its dark colli?
"Sir, ho ropllcd, "your Ignorance Is
only exceeded by my own. I havo
done nothing by which I could Incur
Her Majosty's displeasure. What is
Uio ordor sho has given you?"
"Oh!" tho chlof of pollco answored,
with a long sigh, for his heart was
largor than that official's was generally
supposod to be: "I do not know how
to ton ynu.1
"Is It possible that tho ompross has
lost ,hcr confldenco In mo?" cried tho
banker.
"If that woro all I should not mind,"
said his visitor. "Confldenco may
easily bo restored and a lost position
may bo won back."
"Does sho wlBh mo to return to my
mother country?"
"That would bo rather vexing, I
know," replied tho offlcor, "but a man
of your wealth Is comfortablo any-
whoro."
"Powers above!" whispered Sudor
land, trembling, "it cannot bo that I
am to bo exiled, sent to Slborla?"
"Alas! a man may como bnck, even
from that land of snow and lco."
"Oh! what enn sho havo dono? Am
I to bo thrown Into prison?"
"If that woro all, you would bo al
ready thore, sir," said Rollew.
: "Lord of morcy! Is it tho knout?"
"That is terrible, but It does not
mean death."
"Oh!" cried tho bankor, almost sob
bing with foar at tho torror that lay
bohlnd tho other's rotlconco, "am I
In dangor of my llfo? What can It
all mean? It was only two days ago
that the empress spoko with mo so
graciously 'and snld that sho wished
but I cannot bollovo It! In morcy,
toll mo what horrlblo thing Is threat
ening me; death itself would be less
cruel than this suspense"
"Woll, then," said tho chief of po
lice, In a lamontablo veice: "My
gracious sovorolgn has commanded mo
to have you stuffed."
"Stuffed!" cried Sudtrland, looking
fixedly at his Interlocutor. "You
must havo lost your sonsos, man, or
the oraprcss has lost horsj why, you
couldn't havo received such a com
mand without making hor awaro of
Uio barbarity and extravagance of
such a thing,"
"Alas! my poor friend, I did what
ordinarily I should novor havo dared
to do, I mado cloar my surprise, my
sorrow, and I ovon ventured to re
monstrate humbly, but to no avail.
My gracious sovorolgn reproachod
me, In nn irritated tone, for my hosl
tatios, adding thaeo words wbloK still
echo In my ears: "Qo and do not for
get that It Is your duty to fulfill, with
out a word, whatever commissions I
deign to give you."
It would bo Impossible to depict
the astonishment, tho anger, the fear
and tho despair of tho poor banker.
Tho bolt had fallen outof the clearost
skloB, thero bad bean nothing to
servo him as a warning. Aftor the
first expression of his despair, the
chief of police told him that he would
give him half. an. hour in whloh to put
his affairs In shape.
(But Sudorland begged him, in mercy
to give him time enough to write a
lettter to the empress. Imploring her
pity. The magistrate, won. by hla
supplications and his own horror of
tho command given him, yielded to hlo
petitions and taking tho letter which
Sudorland wrote, hurried to give It
to the Count do Druce, just then high
in Catherine's favor.
Tho count llstonod In astonishment
to tho officer's story and to his own
ontroaty that he would take tho let
ter to tho empress. Surely, the man
must bo crazy. Bidding him wait, he
hurried without delay to tho palace
and bogged for an audience with the
Empress. Catherine was not slown In
receiving him and tho count hastened
to toll' his stoiy.
"Gracious heaven! How horrlblo!"
cried Catherine, us ho finished. "Ho
llow must havo lost his mind
plotoly. Run, count, nnd toll
ompty-headod fool to set my
bankor at llborty Immediately
coin
that poor
and
freo him from all fear of such a ter
rible thing."
Tho count wont back to his house
and gnvo tho order, but whon ho once
more presontod. lumsoir bororo jthe
empress, he found hor holnloss with
laughter.
"I see It now," cried Cathorlno,
laughing anew. "It Is as amusing as
It is Inconceivable. I havo had, for
Bovoral years, a pot dog that I was
vory fond of and which I nnmed Sud
orland becauso tho English bankoi
gavo It to mo. Not long ago, tho dog
died and I ordered Rollow to have
him stuffed, and when ho hesitated,
It mado mo angry, for I thought ho
folt a commission beneath his digni
ty. And this is tho explanation of
tho wholo ludicrous nffalr." Sho
burst once more Into a merry peal of
laughter.
