KOREAN TROUBLES
MAY BE SETTLED.
Demand a Written Pledge from the
Russian Government.
Toklo, Dec. 21. It is learned from
official sou re o that tho Korean part
of tho controversy between Japan and
Russia has been practically settled,
by Russia acknowledging Japan's pre
dominating Influence over the whole
of that country. This fact, however,
I somewhat offset by Japan demand
lng that Russia give her written obli
gation that Manchuria shall not be
come Russian territory. Tho peace
party Is hopoful that the latter de
mand was made subject to reduction,
and peaceful relations will bo restored.
