New York. Doc. IS. Those persons
fortunate enough to own Standard
Oil Stock received a handsome Christ
mas present today in tho shape of
checks for their share of the ? 11,000,
ooo, representing the fourth and last
quarterly dividend of tho year. The
dividend disbursed today amounts to
$12 a share, which 1b an Increase of
2 orer the dividend declared at this
time last year. This brings the total
dividends for the year to 44 per cent.,
or 144,000,000 In dividends for the full
year.
There is po regular rate of dividend
paid on Standard Oil Stock. The dis
tribution Is made out of the earn
ings of tho quarter. When the di
rectors meet slips of paper are pre
sented showing the profits up to date
for the quarter, and the dim: tor
thereupon decide what amount shall
be distributed in dividends to the
stockholders. In the fall and winter
months, when tho use of oil and kind
red products is larger, the dividonds
are jtropcrtionatcly larger.
Jdbn D. Rockefeller Is credited
with owning 83 per cent of the stock
of the Standard Oil Company, and his
receipts from the earnings of the cor
poration during tho current year ap
pear to bo approximately $15,000,000.
The four quarterly dividends of the
corporation this yoar are as follews:
March 20 per cent,; June 7 per cent;
September 5 per centi; November. 12
per cent. In the first quarter of 1902.
20 per cent., was declared; second
quarter, i0 per cent.; third quarter,
5 per cent., and last quarter, 10 per
'cent. The Increase in the dividend
, during tho current quarter Is duo to
largor earnings, resulting from a sharp
j advance In tho prico of oil. According
to an official of the Standard Oil, the
corporation carries a surplus, giving
tho benblt of all earnings to the
stockholders.
Tbo Standard O.l Company is now
disbursing more money to stockhold
ers than any other corporation in
tho world. Tho United States Stoel
Corporation held first place as a divi
dend payor previous to the reduction
in the common dlvidond and the con
version of preferred stock Into bonds.
It now ranks second to the Standard
OJ1 company. Since Jan. 1, 1891, tho
iStnndard Oil company has paid to
stockholders morb than $275,000 000 In
I dividonds. Of that amount John D.
Rockefeller has received more than
$90,000,000. Since 1801 tho disburse
ments of tho corporation run close to
$376 0i0.000, or nearly four times
greater than the $100,000,000 capital
stock.
1 A fair idea of the magnltnde of the
;dividendo of tho Standard Oil com
pany can be obtained from the fact
I that the Pennsylvania Railroad com
Ipany, within the hut 57 years, has
paid something like 319"0O0.0O0 to
stockholders, or $60,000,000 loss than
tho stockholders of the Rockefeller
corporation has received in six years.
In view of the fact that oil has bscn
advancing on the strength of reports
that production Is falling off very
rapidly, the present Increased dividend
or tho Standard Oil company has
caused considerable Interest hi flnan
cial circles. People In close touch
with t.ie situation say that it is very
unlikely that Rockofeller interests
would agree to an Increase in dis
bursements to stockholders If they be
lieved that an oil famine threat-one.

The Brain of an Ant.
Although an ant is a Uay creature,
yet It3 brain Is aven tinier. But al
though it Is necessarily smaller than
th ant head which contains It, yet
It Is larger In proportion, according
to the ants size, than ths brain of
any known creature. The best writers
upon ants those who have made
the astonishing Intelligence of these
little Insects a special study are ob
liged to admit thnt they display rea

and good Judgment Such qualities of
brain show a more than ordinary In
a'Jnct. and we are not surprised to
hear that the ant's big brain carries
out our Idea that he possesses a high

other workers of his sise.
