Rich 0fe:
at Rastus
A Btartllng revelation of the rich-
eat ot the recently dlscqvored Mt.
Rastus gold field lying 60 mllos
southwoet of Dnkor City was made
today by Dr. H. JS. Curry, of this
city, who 1b the ownor of thq Excel
sior rnino in that camp and a part
owner In the Curry-Murray mine. The
few who wore given the opportunity
to see tho ore brought In from the
Excolslor and tho assays made from
It today by D. W. C. Nelson, one of
the leading aseayers of jthls city, were
simpiy asiounuea ni me rosuus. inc
principal samplos from the Excelsior
assayed COS ounce, or S10.600.3& per
ton in gold. The ote Is what is known
as sylranlte and Is similar to the
Cripple Creek ore both In value and
in appearance. This sample of ore
was taken only 12 feet below the sur
face and was shipped to Dr. Curry
by his men at the mine for testing.
Whoi) seen last night Dr. Curry
sa!d that while this particular piece
of ore was astonishingly rich nnd
was perhaps a picked sample, yet It
only confirmed his opinion of the
camp and his faith In Its future. The
doctor has boon familiar with this lo
cation for a number of years, has
hunted all over tho ground and wus
one of the first to discover oro thero.
Ms W. II. Jonos, an old-time Colo
rado and Montana mining man, who
owns claims In the Mt. Raatus camp
adjoining those of Dr. Curry and'oth
er Baker City Investors, came in from
camp yesterday and stated to a news
paper representative that as an old
miner he could honestly say he had
never seen n camp, which promised
more than this one. He was one of
the first to go In there, and samples
taken from his ground n few days
ago assayed from SI up to $250 per
ton In gold. Mn Jonos' principal
pioperty, which he calls the Unity
group adjoins the Curry-Murray. Ho
states that many months ngo while
prospecting thero, tired and worn out
with a crippled foot, ho sat down on
a knoll to rost. Ho had In his hand
a small prospecting pick. At his side
ho noticed a little ploco of outcrop
ping rock which might havo boon cov
ored by a 10x12 ahoet of paper. Out
of in oro curiosity ho broke off a piece
of the rock and Immediately saw that
it was tho outcropping of an oro
ledgo He followed this up, with th.
result that he now has a group of
flno and promising claims.
Tho history of Mt. Rastus reads al
most llko a romance, but nearly nil
of tho discoveries of the rich mining
camps of tho world are romantic in
tho extromo and onthslasts hsro have
good roason to bollovo that this lat
est dlscovory will rosult In a rich
reality growing out of a romantic be
ginning. Dakor City Democrat.
