tho "Records of tho Past Examination
Society," a national organization, com
posed of mon who are interested in
achaoology, has boon requosted to
wrlto a descriptive article for tho Jour
nal issued by tho society, rogardlng
the prohlstorlc Inhabitants of Oregon,
and tho rollcs and mounds loft by
thorn. Ho will propare an article, as
requosted, and will Illustrate It with
a great many valuable vlows of
mounds nnd rollcs which ho has so
cured. It Is a great honor to Mr.
Crawford to havo his abilities as an
archoologist recognized by this oml

In 1886 a boy was born to a noble
man living near KIshnlof, and, accord
ing to tho custom, a nurso waa hired
to have solo chargo of the child until
he became' old enough to bo placed in
tho schools. Tho nurso was com
pelled to sign a contract binding her
to servlco for five years. Sho did hor
work faithfully for two years, and
thon broko hor contract by marrying
a young workman who was often om
ployed at tho nobleman's houso. Sho
had, howevor, boon so faithful to her
littlo chargo nnd had done her work
so well, that tho man brought suit in
tho provincial court to mako hor re
turn and comply with her contract.
In tho trial In tho lower courts the
case was decided In favor of tho girl,
but the nobleman had monoy, and the
caso waa carried up by thoso mysto
rious methods known only in Russia,
until it finally reached tho hlghoat
court of tho land.
This nugust body, called tho high
synod, aftor considerable dolay and
argument, rendored a verdict to the
effect that, Inasmuch as tho girl had
signed tho contract, sh6 must return
nt onco and fulfill it. Imprisonment is
tho ponnlty for refusing to oboy tho
flro brigade, extinguished tho flames court's ordors, nnd tho girl, now
bofore sorlous damngo was caused.
