ized The Salem Young Men's Christian
Association ontorcd upon Its work for
tho coming oeason with tho brightest
prospects of any previous year. Last
Sunday tho first meeting for men was
held, and was largely attended. In
stead of tho regular address by a pos
tor, Bovcral business men gavo short
practical talka aa to tho value of Dible
study. Tho purposo of tho meeting
waa to stlmulato a greater Interest In
Bible study, and at tho closo three
nihlo clossca woro organized, which
will take up regular courses of study,
covering a period of six months.
Tho night school, which has becomo
a special feature of tho association
work, opened on Monday night, and
students havo boon entering the vari
ous classes during tho weok. Tho num
ber of studonts enrolled Is almost
double tho number that entered tho
first week of last yoar. Arrangements
havo Just been completed for classes
in shorthand and typewriting, for
which thero seems to bo considerable
demand. This class will begin work
next Monday night, and a nurabor of
Btudonts havo already been enrolled.
Tho gymnasium has boon tho sccna
of the greatest activity during tho
week, and Mr. Marklo, tho new phy
sical director, recently from Frosport,
III., Is highly pleased wltli tho pros
pects. Ho says tho gymnasium Is bet
ter than that of tho avorago associa
tion, and thero is no reason why a
largo work should not bo done. Tho
ovonlng claHses for young men opened
Tuesday, with a largo attendance. The
afternoon class for studcntB was start
ed Friday, and tho boyB classed on
Wednesday. Other classes that'wlll
bo organized Immediately Is a class
for business men In tho afternoon, and
possibly in tho ovening, and a work
ing hoys' class. Every member, bo
foro taking up physical work, Is given
a thorough examination, Including
measurements and strongth tosts, ex
amination of heart, lungs and other
organs; also tho record of abnormal1
conditions of cheat, back, Bhouldora, ,
hips, etc. A carefully preparod moa I
uromont chart la glvon, and exercises
proscribed to correct abnormalities j
and build up tho woak parts. Classes
aro open to all morabors of the asso-,
