NOTED
INDIAN
JJEADER
Valuable to Whites in the
Matter of Treaties
Tacoma, Jan. 19. General Marcel
ins Spott, more properly known by tho
Indian name of Mureollus Squo-dup-I-kan,
an aged, and noted leader of tho
I'uyallup tribe, died In tho city Jail
last week as the result of alcoholism
and old ago. Ho was found In n .help
loss condition early In the evening by
Officer Nelson near East B and Twenty-fourth
Btroots, and was convoyed to
ffho contrnl station In the patrol wag
on. Ilia condition was so alarming
that physicians wero summoned, who
ndmlnlBtered stlmulantB and did,
everything posalblo to rollovo tho
aged chieftain, but ha was beyond
medical aid and survived only n few
hours.
Coronor R. M. Brown was notlflod
and gnvo directions to have tho body
removed to tho undortnkdr's, whpro It
now lies awaiting tho directions of
rolatlvos, who have boon notified.
Tho deceased loft a brothor-In-law
living on tho Puyallup reservation and
a stop son In Yakima,
After Inquiring Into tho facts Coro
nor Brown doomed no formal Inquest
necossary.
Friendly to the Whites.
Goneral Spott was a man upwards
o.f 80 years of ago and had hold a
prominent placo In tho councils of tho
trlbo, but ho was frlondly to the
whitos, and had frequently boon of
valuablo sorvico to them, especially
in tho oarly treaties negotiated by
Govornor Isaac I. Stovensr
His lovo for flrewator was perhaps
his besotting sin and led to his final
taking off. About a year and a half
ago his family was In Tacoma and left
for homo In tho ovoning In a two-seated
wagon, nil muoh tho worso for li
quor. In going over a bad place In
tho muddy road Mrs. Spott was
thrown from tho wagon Into a pool of
Wator whoro sho was drowned. The
othors wore too much befuddled to
miss hor and drove home without her.
Next day her body was found.
The general and his son indulged in
moro liquor, and on tho following
night the son was struck by a street
car and killed while driving home
His Recent Troubles.
Not long afterward General Sjxjtt
took an Indian woman named Kate
Arquette to live with htm. She had
another husband living, who shf
claimed had abused her. Spott and
the woman went to live temporarily
in a shack near tlw county road, and
had been there hut a few days in Junr
last when an Indian known as Tommy
Santiago Howard called at tho plao
one night and demanded admission
eying he wanted something to eat
and he wanted-to Me Kate. Spott told
him she wag sick, bnt he could see her
If ha wanted. to.
As Spgtt afterward told the story
in court, Howard at one began an as
sault upon the woman, but Spott drove
him out of the shed. Howard came
back with a knife and Spott ran away
Presently Howard came out dragging
the wretched woman. Next morning
she was found dead with evidences of
baring ueea eltoked to death.
Howard was eosrleted of wan
slaughter and sentenced to 30 years'
imprisonment. He is now (a Jail
pending an appeal to the supreme
court.

SCROFULA
Bad air, poor food, insuf
ficient clothing, dark, damp
or crowded apartments are
frequent causes of scrofula.
Perhaps this explains why the
ailment is so common in. the
poorer sections of large cities.
Scrofula, however; does not
recognize city limits. It pre
vails under all conditions of lo
cation, soil and climate. More
over, it is but a step to
cqnsurnption, and herein lies
the great danger. It is just
as well to avoid the step.
It is rather strange that
Scott's Emulsion should con
tain just the very things that
nature requires in curing
scrofula. The pure Nor
wegian cod liver oil.'helps to
build up the whole body and
enables one to acquire new,
healthy, solid flesh. The hy
pophosites of lime and soda
act as a tonic on the blood
and tissues, replacing the
waste and giving strength and
new structure where it is most
needed. Because of its mild
action, pleasing taste and
nutritive properties, Scott's
Emulsion is vastly superior
to plain cod liver oil. There
is nothing that will do more
good in the case of scrofula
than Scott's Emulsion.
We 11 tend you a sample (rt upon request.
SCOTT & BOWNE,
409 Pearl St., New York.
From tho tlmo of Howard's arrost
In Junn until the trial In September
Spott was also detnlned In Jail as a
witness, and during thnt time he got
woll sobered up; but when tho trial
was ended ho foil back Into his old
hnblt of 'dissipation, and has boon rap
Idly going to tho bad over since.
According to Spott's own statemont
ho was born In Stoilacoom and wnB
about 20 yoors old when Uio first whlto
settlers enmo to Puget Sound.
