Jeffries, a stranger In this city, was placed under arrest by the local police officers Friday evening and Is now detained In tho city Jail. He is suspected of bolng directly con nected with, or at least Implicated In tho recent burglarizing of tho gun store of John Maurer, In this city, when revolvers to tho value of about $200 were taken from the show win dow. On Friday afternoon Jeffries en tered tho Btoro of Mr. Maurer, and offered for sale a revolver that wna tho exact counterpart of ono of the re volvors that was stolen from that place a week ago. Mr. Maurer becamo suspicious of the man, but did not purchase the flro-plece. Later tho stranger returned and mado further Inquiry nbout tho burglary. Ho ex plained his possession of tho revolver by stating that ho had acquired tho samo In a gambling game at Tho Dalles a short time ago, but ropro sented that ho got tho gun some fow days boforo tho Maurer storo was burglarized. On tho occasion of Jeff ries' second visit to tho gun-storo he did not havo tho rovolvor, which, ho claimed, had boon disposed of to a farmor. This further aroused tho sus picions of Mr. Maurer, who consulted with tho police officers, who causod the arrest of tho follow.
