SALEM LABOR UNIONS.
These organisations are a new thing
In this city. For many years a Print
ers' Union was maintained, by the
fact of the stats printing oulee being
located here. Otherwise Salem was
not a labor town.
In its palmy days the order of the
Knights of Labor had a strong lodge
at Salem. Nearly every politician in
town belonged to it But it went Ha
way, and has only of late revived In
the Bast.
The Grange has always partaken of
the features of a labor union, pursuing
lines of co-operative work, anil seek
ing to better the social conditions of
the farmers' life, and also to exert a
political Influence.
The fruitgrowers have organized
two co-operative unions the prune
HgTOwers and the strawberry growers
both seeking, through co-operation, to
benefit themselves and prevent ruin
ous cempeUtion.
The Salem labor unions hold elso-
Uons this month, and should seek to
put the wisest aad moat level-headed
people to tho front The radical and

With greater prosperity, and the
building of a larger city. Salem will,
under good management, support
many labor unions, and they will do
