Taken to the Hotpltal.
W. H. Weetcott. who was shot last
Sunday afternoon by the accidental
llscharxing of a gun In the hands of

critical, and it was deemed necessary
to have him taken to the hospital m

An Old Offender.
Harry Dunn, who has for years been
a familiar figure In tbo Salem police
ootirt, was this morning brought be
fore Police Judge Judah on the usual
charge of drunkenness. He was sen.
tenced to 10 days' Imprlsonmont. Dunn
waa many years ago declared a com
mon drunk by the city council. buL in

stant state of Intoxication.
Named by the County.
Tbe Marion county commissioners'
court has named Messrs. II. D. Thlel
en, of this city, and 15. C. WeJsner, of
Laurence, as delegates to the state Ir
rigation congress, which will be con
vened In Portland on November 18 and
1. Governor Geer and Mayor Hlshop
have already named a number of dele
gates to the same meeting, which
promises to be largely attended, and
of great Interest to the state.

CONTRACTED
Salem Cannery Company Arranges
With Farmers for the Growing of an
Increased Acreage of This Fruit.
The Satan Cannery Company has
contracted with farmers of tills vicin
ity for the growing of t acres of red
raspberries with which to supply ita
plant In this city for canning pr
poees. It is expected that this acre
age will produce about JK tone of the
fruit The acreage that is devoted to
the growing of raepberriea la. thw lo
cality is not as large as it was a few
years ago. nut by insuring a ready
market for tbe fruit the cannery com
pany hopes to encourage the cultiva
tion of a larger acreage of all kinds of
fruit. This same plan might work ad
mirably with the strawberry crop.
This crop, however, Is more extensive
ly grown about Salem than other vari
eties, but there are room for many
acres more of this berry, which always
box a ready sale In the open market
and at the cannery.

who has made many friends In Salem,
will return to his old home in Philadel
phia. THE COUNCIL OPENING.
Fred Neckermann Will Entertain His
Friends.
"The Council," at 141 State Btreot,
the new saloon Just started by Fred
Neckermann, will be opened Wednes
day evening. The place has been ole
gantly fitted up, and on the occasion of
the opening there will be served free
to all comers, sandwiches, of all kinds,
salads, tree toads stuffed with white
mice, sllppry elm tea, mucilage and
other delicacies of tbe season.
Dave McPadden and Sammy Sau
aln will have charge of the bar,
where everything rich, rare and racy
will be served to the queen's taste. The
proprietor will be In evidence to wel
come his many friends, and see that
all hare a good time. Everybody wel
