Salem Man Returns From

from a SO months' stay hi Alaska, gave
a Joaraal representative this aoraing
aa Interestlns; areoest of his ex

the country to the north. Mr. Rhodes
left Salem In April. ltM. and and red

pnraly on prospeetlsg trip, baring
been fur many years a practical miser,
and, while the trip dM not benefit bin
to the extent that be had hoped,
still hf ssys he was paid for the time
and efforts expended, and probably
did bHter than had he remained for
the same Urns In this city.
Mr. Rhodes spent most of his time
at Juneau. Sitka and Skscway. and
made a single trip to the mouth of the
Yukon. While he fond nothing that
would Justify him in staying, still he
ears it Is a great country, and there
Is a vast amount of sold for those
who are fortunate enough to And It. He
says that the country Is still in It 6 In
fancy, so far as the development of Its
mineral wealth Is concerned, but a
great amount of capital Is required to
work the mines profitably, slnco the
greater part of the ore In far bolow the
surface, and modern and expensive
machinery Is needed to treat with
thee conditions. Persons having
money to go Into this country, and not
bo dependent on mining for a llvlnc,
bat can engage In some kind of busi
ness venture, but Mr. Rhodes says that
this lln of business: Is being over
done. He reports that there la a sur
plus of all kinds of labor, and that
there are more people stranded there
than probably any other place In the
world. Hut he thinks that there Is no
fear that any will suffer during tho
wlntet, since living Is so cheap there.
There Is no excuse for a man without
money going hungry, for the white
grouse In countless numbers and tons
of flati are to be had but for the going
after. Mauy people are coining out
this season for the winter. On tho
vessol that Mr. Rhodes, camo out on
there were over 700 passengers, tho
crntt being loadod to the fullest possi
ble oxtent.
Living in the section of Alaska that
Mr. Rhodes visited Is surprisingly
cheap. He never paid moro than 26
cents n dosen for eggs, and on the
day ot his arrival home he was com
pelled to iay 30 cents n dozan for tho
same article, lluttor was to be had of
ood qnullty for only 25 cents a pound,
and all other necessities were to he
had at proportionate figures, flour

f fish and game that Infest that sec
tion, the people are by no moons de
pendent an Impnrtod meats. Clothing,
hoots and shoes could be purchased In
Mm Juneau mnrkut cheaper than In
Seattle.
Mr. Rhodes says the famous Trend

valuable mining property about Ju--it-nu
