BIG YIELD

AFTER FATTENING TWO BANDS
OF SHEEP A DENTON COUNTY
FARMER THRESHES 50 BUSHELS
AN ACRE.
A field of vetch, threshed by John
Whltnker the Inttor pnrt of Inst week
Is attracting soma attention among
furmors, says thu Corvallls Times. The
Held comprised 18 acres, nnd the yield
wns 16000 bushels, or over HO bushels
per acre. Fiom 32 acres the yield wns
1116 bushols, or nearly 3fi bushels pei
ncro.
To mnko thu crop morn Interesting,
It Is to bo understood thnt the vetch
was cut witli n mnwor, raked up like
hay, and threshed fiom the cock. It
wns quite rlpo whon cut, and It Is es
tlmated the ninnunt of grain lost, If
saved, would hnvo swelled tho total
ylold to nt lonst 60 bushols per ncro.
Much of the grain had fallen down
and wns flat on the ground when
mnwod.
The field was sown last fall. It was
pastured until Mny 1st, nnd during the
time two bauds of mutton sheen were
turned off of It. The seed is said to
bo worth $1.60 a bushel, which, toeth
er with the fattened shoep, makes the
crop very profitable. Eight dollars per
day was paid the machine for thresh
lug, nnd the average cost per bushel
was 26 conts.
Mr. Whltnker estimates that for hay
the Hold would have turned off eight
tons par acre. He expects to sow a
much Inrgur acreago next yenr. Here
after Mr. Whltaker will pasture his
vetch fields until May 16th.
