My challenge to C. Thayer, to C. H.
Carey and his auxiliaries, constitutes
a few more articles which will nbt be
lacking In details, nor in lame, of
which the abovo Is only a prologue
nnd program, and n imrt of the Intro
duction. Thoro Is no time to be lost to ave
to the people of Oregon the best and
most valuable timber lands of the
state. Thoro are other men and com
panies who are at the present time tak
ing up timber claims by the wholesale
In some southern county, all In a fraud
ulent manner, and for one and the
same arty, against the law. The best
way to get acquainted with the unlaw
ful acts of these men and companies Is
to drive them In the open Held and
make them light.

prosecuted In the courts, and punished
as their misdeeds require," are strict

lees than 40 days the statutes of limi
tations will allow C. Thayer, of Til la
mook, to go free. If he is not indicted
before. C. Thayer Is not sick, as his
friends claim him to be.
C. H. Carey here, the Mitchell pollt
leal lender, has put himself on record
that none shall hurst C. Thayer. J. II.
Hall, the United Htates attorney of Or
egon, Is a political imttuer, aud under
the polltlrul whip of ('. li. Carey, ami
m cannot, aud does nut want to, pros
ecute C. Thayer, and. In case that he
should, the Issue will be a fiasco.
The successor of J. Hall cannot be
recommended by Senator Mitchell or
Congressman Tongue, or by anybody
else, unless he Is a willing Instru
ment of C. II. Carey, the defender aud
the mask of C. Thayer, the pTet Tu
tor. The other officers, on account of the
political and Intimate relations with
C. Thayer will not allow a conviction.
It is the opinion here that the case
might Im beet itroeecuted by and he
fore men who are not affiliated with
the iHilltlca of Oregon, and who are
free from any pressure and Innuence.
The Tillamook cases are so notori
ous here that the ecate of the Hrte
tratnr, through political pressure and
scheming, will Ue a great scandal and
an alarming precedent.

agrees to transfer to the receiver of
the defunct bank her dower Intereet
to all real estate Involved In the bank

Cosper, who Is the principal claimant
In the pending case, aad the attorneys
for the other Interested- parties and
the Interveners, have accepted tho
proposition. The matter was formally
presented to Circuit Judge Boise yes
terday afternoon for bis consideration,
lib announced that he would continue
the consideration of the proposition
until morning.
The estimate value of the dower In
terest of Mrs. Gilbert In the property
that It Is proposed to transfer to the
receiver Is given at about $20,000.
which, the Gilberts allege, exceeds the
valuation of the property that they
desire to have transferred to them.
The projwrty to which Mrs. Gilbert
agrees to relinquish her dower Inter
est consists of business and residence
projterty In Moscow, Idaho; Uuena
Vista, Newport, Salem and Portland,
and also Includes a fourth Interest in
five quarts mines In the Bohemia min
ing district.
In this same case the First National
Hank of Corvallls has filed an amend
ed claim for an alleged balance of
1S21S.7.

Judge Boise heard some arguments
In the case this morning. G. G. Bing
ham, who appeared for the lecelver,
said there was no objection on the
part of Receiver Gatch to the accept
ance of the proiKMdtlon, since It would
facilitate the administration of the es
tate, but he wished to be advised In
the matter of the household goods, to
which he would be exiected to give a
hill of sale. In their petition, the Gil
berts claimed to be jtoaseeeed of
household good of the value of $300,
while an inventory of the effects had
disclosed about $1500 worth of goods.
McNary aud Ford considered the ques
tion of the controversy an unim
portant one, since large Interests
would be served hy the acceptance of
the proHMltlon, anil the delivery to the
Gilberts of their entire stock of house
hold goods. After some further argu
ment, Judge Boise directed Receiver
Gatch to execute to Mrs. Gilbert a
deed to her home proierty In this city,
and to give her a hill of sale to hur
household effects and team and car
riage, and In return therefor to re
ceive deeds conveying to himself, as
the roceiver. the dower Interest of
Mrs. Gilbert to all of the real estate
Involved In the litigation. In passing
Umiii the matter Judge Boise said ho
considered It was In the Interest of the
estate tnat the dower Interest of the
wife might he acquired, as a means of
expediting the settlement of the re
ceivership. Judge Boise directed the receiver to
address a letter to all claimant hold
ing collaterals requesting them to re
port the amount of the collections they
have made thereon since the hank
failure, that credit may lie given there
on on their respective claims against
the
bank, ami that where the nav-
ments on the collaterals have exceed
d the amount of the original claim,
then the account will be extinguished,
and any balance that may exist will
revert to the receiver

Sunday Dutlnesi Excursion.
The Hrst Sunday business men's ex
cursion to the seaside at Newport will
be given by the Southern Pacific on
next Sunday, the train leaving Salem
at a. hi., and returning In the even
Ins;. If this train is patronised. It will be
made a regular feature, and at $X.S0
for the round trip, about one cent a
mile. It ought to get a large crowd.
Starting the train from Salem, in
stead of Albany, will give the excur
sion a big line of business that It nev
er had before, and residents of the
Capital City will enjoy the ride over
the mountains, the cooling breeses

The Second Itesjlment band have ar
ranged to go over to New port, on the
Sunday excursion, and will 'remain
two weeks.
