What papers did he read? None

IT MAKES A DIFFERENCE.
If a sheriff had found Men Ill's body,
or some alleged detective, the paper
would have given him great credit for
astuteness. It would hnve been a
L'rsat. "illeccovery." He would have
been on the scont, otc.
Hut as only a woman found it, alio
was reported to be out blackborrylng,
and accidentally stumbled onto tho
decaying body. It was admitted that
she smellod tho stench, but sho wuh
not deep or scientific In tho matter as
a detective or sheriff would havo
been,
A sheriff or detective would lfnve
blazoned tho discovery as something
almost equal to a capture, and would
havo promptly appeared with Inter
views and ho would havo claimed
nothing less than the $1,500.
Huch a discovery by a mero woman,
nnd she out blncltberrylng, oven If It
were not truo, amounts to not much
more than If a llttlo dog had run across
tho decaying body. It lack tho dig
nity and tho official Importance of n
discovery by an olllcer.
As It wns only a wornn who found
tke body she should have at least half
of the reward offered for the return
of the body "allvo or dead." She had
the sentimental Instinct to clothe
tho body In a decent storo suit and
put It lu a second-class colli n.
An olllclnl would havo tumbled the
remains of the dead ox-convict Into u
barrel or a gunny sack and would hnve
aved expense while claiming tho ro
wuid.,Thu "olllclnl" would havo had
a fee bill and a mileage bill against
tho county or state besides. A womnn
discovery Is always different.

FOR PRISON 8UPT. AT SALEM.
Henry Downing' friends are cou
lldent that ho will receive considera
tion at the hands of the Chamberlain
administration In his candidacy for
superintendent of tho state prison.
Ho has been u cnudldate for county
ulllfoe and has been county chairman
when the party he represented wa
hopelessly In the minority. There Is
tttroug feeling among the Democrut
thnt he Is entitled to some appoint
ment for faithful services to the par
ty. This alone should not entitle u man
to any olllce unless he I lit for it.
ami If Gov. Chamberlain can llntl a
man better lUted for the olllce lu some
other part of the state he should ap

Henry Downing will not lie sore
