On Saturday evening Misses Neva
Grlswold nnd Ethel Rlgdon gave a
tally-ho party In honor of their friends,
the Misses Cauflold, of Oregon City,
who havo been visiting In Salem. A
pleasant drlvo down tho rlVer road
was enjoyed by the young people, and
at Its conclusion tho party returned to
tho home of Miss Hlgdon, where a
program of parlor games nnd music,
supplemented with delicious Ico cream
nnd cake, wns Introduced. In a pro
gressive game, In which the capacity
of the contestants was sorely tested,
Miss Dot Deny won tho prize. The
tost was mirth-producing and Involved
drawing, writing poetry, threudlng
needles and sewing. W. H. Durghardt
ahnwud gront proficiency with the
noodle, but failed to capture the prize.
A most enjoyable time was the natur
al result, when the function wns en
gineered by such happy entertainers
as the Misses Grlswold and Hlgdon.

and Mrs. George Munger, and, In addi

John F. Mnrkley. charged with the
murder of John D. Fain, at Champoeg,
this morning pleaded not guilty to tho
Information. His attorneys, Messrs.
Cnrson and Adams, of this city, and
John M. Gearln, of Portlnnd, asked
that the trial bo deferred until the tic
tober term. In support of tho motion,
they contended thnt the best interests
of tho community would bo served by
tho postponement, since the fooling
agnliiBt Markley had been nugmonted
by the wholesale murders being com
mitted by a fugitive convict, and that
these conditions were ndverse to In
suring for tho defendant n fair and Im
partial trial, as a disposition existed to
punish somebody for somo crime.
Markloy's ntjorneys said they wero
making investigations that promised
to substnntlnte tho protostntions of the
defendant as to the Innoconco of the
crlmo for which ho Is charged.
Judge Burnett held thnt slnco the
district attorney had refused to ngroe
to n postponement of tho ense that It
was Incumbent upon tho defense to

phase of the history of the Salem

ended could be measured only by
events, not by nn lncrenso in nroa or
growth of population. In tho period
covered by tho life of tho Salem

the expansion along educational linos

lu population, through the agency of
science there had resulted marvelous
productions of home and public con
veniences. At tho tlmo tho Salem
Church was organized In 1SH2. with n
membership of only four, there wore
only four churches In the torrltory
represented In Oregon. Wnshlngton,
Idaho and Montana, with a comblnod
membership of less than 100. At the
present tlmo tho same district has
more thnn 200 churches, with n mem
bership exceeding 10,000. A single

tho work. Liberty Implies Justice
equality, universal klnduoss and help
fulness. Truo liberty Implies physic
al. Intellectual and spiritual life, while

gross. A clear and practical Interpre

possessions? In spiritual things we
