gestion was accepted, and for over two
hours was the singer's voice raised In

thoso with him to depart.
Tim Into Joseph Mans had a some
what slmllur experience. Years back,
when with a companion buffalo hunt
ing on tho American prairies, lie was
captured by Indians nnd carried to
their camp. When at his wits' end
bow to cxtrlcnto himself from tho
dilemma, his friend suggested tho pow
er of song. Forthwith ho commenced
an operatic selection that so delighted
his captors that they loosened his
bonds and urged him, at tho point of
their spears, to continue.
Luckily bis volco had a soporific ef

ful queen, trading on their past fame
is too common. In this the personali
ty of Mr. Hanford and his leading
woman, Helen Qrantly, leave noth
ing to bo desired. He has a magni
ficent physiquo, a handsomo face, a
flno volco and is ono of tho best ac
tors on the stage today. Miss Grant
ley is very young to play such roles
and is a beauty; possessing a loveli
ness which needs no make-up and de
fies tho brightest calciums. Sho is a
slender, graceful nnd a fine actress.
"Tho comedy is tho most boisterous
of nil tho Shakespearean plays.
Written in 1697, it has tho manners of
old anonymous play, 'The Taming of
a Shrow,' which Shakespeare revised,
giving his attention almost solely to
tho two loading characters, Katherlno
nnd Pctruchlo. Tho old play had
boon previously modlflod by an un
known writor. Shakespearo's como-
on the point of stopping from exhaus
tion, the last passed Into the renlm
of dreams. Then he nnd his compan
ion quietly stole away.
His wonderful volco on ono occasion

official shook his head and remarked
