to rambling discourses, that occasionally
had to be nulled down by Mayor Bishop,
although good careful business Judg
ment prevailed as usual.
The city fathers assembled Anally ilx
ed the official grado of High street at the
Intersection of .Ferry, at 35 feet, instead
ol 30.
In tho matter of securing u public
dumping ground for tho city, the place
selected is that portion of Liberty meet
lying between the south line of terry
street and the grado ol tho Southern
Pacific railway company on Trade street,
a9 a nubile dumping ground for all clean
and healthful refuso matter and that
provisions be made forbidding the dump
lug upon theio grounds of nny garbage
or wasto substances likely to create foul
odors and unhcalthful influences, a
penally to be imposed for tho violation
thereof.
Tho Greater Salem Commercial Olub
presented a communication to the coun
cil pledging their support lu tho matter
ol cleaning tho streets nnd nlleya ol the
city, and othor means of municipal im
provement. A petition was presented and referred
to the proper c mmitteo relating to the
painting of tho Yew Park hoeo house. It
is to be painted with good paint and it-
colvo two coats, except on the eoutli
side, where it will receive throe coats,
the cost of the work not to oxceed $200.
A petition was filed, and promised Im
mediate attention, for tho rebuilding ol
the sidewalk nloug tho north side of
Ferry street, bet eon Commercial nnd
Liberty streets.

moved to the Yew Park hoso houso, for

for its disposal there.
It was ordered that the fumigating
lamp of tho city bo placed at tho dispos

gon Stato Insano Asylum, committed
suicldo sonietimo Monday night by
strangulation, his lifeless body being
found in his tooui Tuosday, Pteifier
had improvised a ropo from a shoot
taken from Ida bed nnd by securely
adjusting It about his neck, deliberately
stranded himself. Tho coroner wrs
notified but decided tho circumstances
surrounding the man's death did not
warrant any investigation.
Pfeiffer was aged 27 vears nnd had
been receiving treatment at the asylum
for about a year, having been committed
to that Institution Iroin Eastern Oregon
In February 1001. The remains were
this morning shipped to Sellwood, Mult
nomah county, where a brother resides
nnd where burial eorvices will be con
ducted. This is tho second suicldo lin
the past several mouths.
