Mass Meeting to Discuss Pro fits on Business Brings Out a Large Attendance. A SPASM OF HYPOCRISY. Oregon politics Boms -nay. Is pass ing through n period of superabundant hypocrisy. Thoro seems nay, is very littlo earnestness and honesty in tho pro-convention discussion o( men and matters. All the talk among Republicans, pro and con, about abuses in the public land business, 1b not aimed eo much at refor mation as at some injury to thin faction or that candidate. Thb Jouimr. has for years charged frauds in tho federal and stato land departments thoy still exist. The discussion of tho governorship is not based on whether Qcor has made a fairly good or a loss than average execu tive. It Is In tho interest of factions who want the place so as to reward frlonds. Tho fight over the senatorship is not honest nor aimed at any abuse in the federal sorvico. All the abuses of federal appointments aro now glossed ovor and tho state press was full of them for years aud even insulted McKinley personally on account of thu character of some of them. 8ome of tho papers that talk tho loud est about bosslsm and corruption aro themsoivos participants in boodle on a large scalo. Fure politics at tho hands of any fac tion fighting for spoils is a myth, and that is all tho factions aio fighting for. Not ono of their lenders is sincere in wanting bettor govornment. Thoy want office. Tho peoplo who want good overn mont should not bo deceived by a zeal for roform that is only a cloak for politi cal rapacity. If the pooplo got a bettor servico in tho Henato or a better stato administration It will come from other sourcesjthan spasmodic hypocrisy based on hunaor for place. If wo got a hotter stato govornmont it will be by tho taxpayers and patriotic cltlzons who love good govornmont for its own satisfactory roturn, holding a club ovor all tliuso politicians clamoring for spoils. Don't fall In with their factions. Don't promise your voles until you can soo some progresi made besides hatred of ono aspirant over another. COSPER FORD AND GILBERT Nkiyubiki. Marcli 3. (Special) An enthusiastic meeting of fruitgrowers was held here this foronoon, and wan addressed by E. Hofer, of Salem, for some time. The meeting was held for the purpose ot golting the people in terested In strawberry culture as an in dustry. It was well attended, and the amount of interest tnimfected very en couraging. The tenor of Mr. Hofer's talk was In favor of establishing a Irult- growers' union similar to thote of Hood River and Salem, in order that borrie may he marketed In quantity and shipped In carload lots Mr. Hofer.told his andlence that if 25 or 50 people would each raise one-half to two acres of strawberries, it would be tho greatest thing industrially that could come to this community. Iu tne first place, the grower is sure of f 100 to f'JOO nut profit per acre from his land. Thire is work for tho laboring people of tho community at a time of tho year when otherwlso there Is no work. Money in distributed throughout tho neighbor hood. No appreciablo amount of capital or new equipment is required, and all may engago in the industry. Thoro is absolutely no fear of overproduction when homes can bo shipped in the im proved refrigerator cara to Ohicago or Boston. The strawberry Industry lias mado Hood River, and Mr Hofer ex prcstud himself confident that Newberg Is aH woll adapted to strawberry culture as Hood River. A lively discussion followed the ad dress and the sentlmont expressed was strongly In favor of taking up the in dustry and;formiug a union. Another meeting Is to be held March 10, and a committee consisting ot Joseph Hall, E. 0. Armstrong, J. L. Haworth, G. O. Carl and Zimri Mills was appointed to inako a cauvass for strawberry acreage, Tin. ii.iiiinr In luilncr taL'on nn in a prompt, DuiineBS-iiuo way mai promises delimit results.
