By exposing a wire-tapping conspiracy, a prominent and wealthy young mining man of Butte saved the Butte poolroom b laat Monday about $25,000 or $30,000 on the Oakland races. Tho facts came to llnht yesterday, in an effort to discover some parties to tho alleged conspiracy in Utah. The re ports were delayed by wire, and the re. suit was telephoned to Butte about 15 minutes iu advance of the telegraphic rejwrts. To ascertain tho truth of tho tips and tho extent of the alleged wire" tapping, the mining man placed several thousand dollars oh the result of one race. Several men in the alleged con epliacy also put up large sums, and they stood to break the poolrooms, but for the fact that the mania question, after rat inlying himself that tho job was being cArried out sueceaafully, exposed the plot and pulled down hia inouey, re marking: "I hke to make easy money, but ( am not that kind of a sport."
