"At The Old Cross Roads."
One of tho best attractions of tho the
atrical season was tho production of "At
tho Old CroiR Roads" at tho Grand
opora houso Friday night. Tbo com
pany ia under the managomont of Arthur
0. Alston, which is a guaranteo'of its
excellence, as Mr. Aiaton has visited Sa
lem several times before and always
brings good plays.
The story of the play is ono not us
ually presonted in this way, being a
story of the South, not touching on tho
war period. Every Southerner in tho
audience pronounced tho en tiro play and
people to bo typical in their exactitude
to" detail and all enjoyed with intense
interest the good dramatic work.
Tho most prominent characters
wero "i'aropa" tho octoroon, Estha
Willliams and Jono Corcoran as tho
heiress to a magniflcont property, and
also the daughtor of tho octoroon.
Thomas Inco as tho tramp and orstwhilo
pretended count waH a decided favorto,
as also wuro Edwin Walter the gambler
and Mostyn Kelly, as Tom Martin.
Mrd. Craig and Louiso Valentine as
sumed the roles of negroes in an em
inently Btttislactory way.
