FRUIT"
GROWERS
UNION
Hood River Glacier: At a meeting of
the strawberry grow ors and others in
terested iu tho fruit Industry waBuold at
Salem, October 12th. A report of tho
mooting eays: "It was decided that an
effort should bo made in tbo near future
to organizo the strawberry growers of
this locality into a fruit union, on the
sam plan as a union was formed nt
Hood River. It was stated that Hood
River growers received an average of
$2.13 per crate for their berries while
Salem growers received only from 00 to
05 cents pur crate. A largo part of tho
diffiionco In tho prico was attributed to
tho fact that Salem growors aro not or
ganized so as to be ablo to till orders for
carload lots of berries. It Is now pro
poed to Induco growers In this part of
the valley to produco a particular class
of berry, so as to secure uniformity, and
to form a union through which tho fruit
may bo sold. An effort will bo tundo to
scctiro tho aid of Hood River people in
perfecting tho organization bore. A
higher prico for berries hero would help
the Hood Rlvor growers by stiffening tho
market for them. Tho largo area of
good berry land in tills county and the
oxcellont samplos of berries shown to
day, load growers lo declare that Salem
can ship as many and as good borries us
aro sout out from tho famous Hood River
valloy. Whether nn good borrios for
shipment can be grown at Salem as are
grown nt Hood River is a question yet to
be decided. And whiloahigbor prico for
berrlos nt Salem might help prices nt
Hood River in tho local mat kets, ship
ments iu carload lots would not belli
Hood Rlvor unloss shipments from both
places were mado under the came man
agement. Tho nbove raises tho points ot Interest
to growers at both Hood River aud Sa
lom. A fruit growora, union at Salem is
indisponsiblo to protect tho berry trade
at both places. For instance, tho Hood
Rivor berry is grown on tho sandy bot
tom laud about Salem, aud is oven a
good crop on the heavier lauds of r-alem
prairio in favorablo locations. The so
called Hood Rivor borry Ib Clark's sood
llng.and grows to tbo grontest perfection
for the homo market and cannery at Sa
eom, and qtilto a number of crates woro
shipped from here last year. Thoy wore
bo largo and lino in color and quality
that thoy brought ordors for more. One
small shipment from Salem to a Cali
fornia town brought an ordor for a car
load. Tho Clark's Seedling grown at
Salem is probably not as good a shipping
berry for distant markotsaswben grown
at Hood River. Hut both places can
produco fruit of bucIi excellence and
superiority that thoy havo no need to
fear of holding markets. The difference
iu price rocoived by growers at tho two

places is bo great that as Salem ship-
: , , " ., ... .. . , . ,
ments increase they are bound to iuter-
foro with Hood River trado.
A meeting of the fruit growers ot Sa
lem and vicinity is to be held at Salem
on Saturday, Nov. 23rd for th purpose
ot bearing a discussion of tho morits of
forming an union of interests locally and
possibly ot avoiding friction and compe
tition with Hood Rlvor. Industrial
agent Judflon of tho S. P. Co. expects to
havo rouio representative men from
Hood River nt that meeting to tell tho
growers hero how it is dono. Tiik Jour
nal believes that tho Clark's seedling
berries grown horuoau be handled titular
tho Hood Rlvor brand with hotter re
