by Professor Cordley, of tlio 8tato Af

and asked some, questions, dostroua of

Prof. Knlsoly. also of the Agricultural
College, followed with a paper, illus
trated by a chart, upon "Chemical Foa
turos of Fruit?." Ilu spoko upon tho
technical and scientific elilo of horticul
ture, giving an analysis of tho protui
nont fruits ns lo their food value. Most
fruits havn but little such value, but nro
in demand as relishes and appetizers.
The greator part of the paper was do-
voted to show lue tho relation of the dif
ferent cjieiuieal properties of tho soil to
the healthy urowth of the tree and to
tliii successful development of the fruit.
Tho discussion resulting from tho paper
was very general and finally dovloped
into an aggressive and highly entertain
ing bout between "Hood Hlvor" Smith
and Editor Williamson, of the Oregon
Agriculturist, upon tho rclatUo merits
of Hood River and Willamette Valloy
apples. Both gonllomou were enthusi
astic and inailn many sharp hits, to tho

In a napar upon "Tho Cherry'1 E. II.
Skinner, of Springbrook, recalled some
interesting factB in the hhtory of cherry
culture, in which ho hns been especially
interested for -10 years. Mr. Skinner re
ferred to the different cherry disensos to
be contended with, gumosia in particu
lar, and gavo tho following as the modo
of proccduro which ho has found most
biiccessful iu procuring healthy trees.
