Ciiicaoo, Juno 25. After atabbing
seven persons, Harry Williamr, colored,
barely escaped lynching last night at
tho hands of an angry mob.
The crowd, armed" with clubs, canes
and stonea.piirHued him down Clark nnd
Van Buren Streets until Lieutenant
Cudmo-e and Sergeant Flynn of the
central detail police appeared. The
ofllcer grappled with tho negro who
tried to stab Cudmoro in the arm.
Just as thoy had wrenched the knifo
from him the mob of pursuers reached
the ecene.' Several rushed forward and
attempted to take the negro from tlio
olllcers, but ujwni the arrival of the pa
trol wagon dibpersod. Tlia trouble
was caused by a stabbing affair,
in which Williams had acted
as principal, A inun who gave hi name
as Harry Thomas accidentally ran
against the negro. A quarrel followed;
then William drew his knife stabbed
'Jhotnai five times. Brandishing his
knife, he ran down the street stabbing

has not lost sight of the question of tho

advices to tho Journal of commorco, and
is likely soon to tako it up for serious

actual scarcity of silver coins in tho

tho heavy demand forcurroncy In China
while tho forces of tho powers woro at

havo cured itsolf to aomo extent. In
view of tho partial amelioration of theko
conditions it ia probable that Secretary
Root will confine his action to
the study of tho situation with the
viow of recommending to Congress a
comprehensive plan for a pormanont

plau which Secretary Hoot and Secretary

had the cordial endorsement of tho Sec

of a fixed rato of oxchnngo botneou tho
