Astoria Special : Tlio moral crusaders hive loit thoir first fight, and a justice 'court has decided that the ProebBtel iifckel-ln-tho Blot maclilno law is a dead letter. In vlow of tho fact that tho law in question is most oxplicit in prohib t irig tho Use bf slot machines, It was ox pooled by tlio eriiBadora thatthoy would have no dililculty in securing n convic t on, but, to thoir tdiargiin, the jury whicli heard tho case of tho state of Oregon vis. Curtis, wlillo District Attorney Allen and Depu ty Eakin appeared for tlio prosecution, After t&o hours a verdict of acquittal w is rendered. While noiio of tho jurors questioned the contention of tho prosecution that the defendant was plainly guilty of an infraction of tho law, all thought that conviction would moan tho closing of all the gambling games, and eventually all tho saloons. For this reason, Mr. Madi son was acquitted. It was tho Intention ot the cigar-dealers, in event of the con viction of Mr. Madison, to send for tho now Portland machines, which can bo operated without tho uso of nickels. Now, however, the slot machines will continuo to ho operated.and the city will roceivo a monthly revenue for each ono in ueo in town. An Excellent Combination. Mo'iioni arrived in -'ulem Monday evening aiti-r a three years absence in the Klondike country. Ho c imua for a shor. visit witli his family in this city. Mr. Mothorn left Salem in January 1808 and expects to return to Dawson in about three vueks. Mr. Motlir-rii'ii return to Sulem at this time was purely accidental. Last March he nnd his partner left Dawson for the Copper River country on a prospecting tour. Arrived there they found it was imposfelblo to purchuso any food what ever and their stock, of provisions not being BUillciont for both, Mr. Mothorn concluded to return via Skagwny to Dawson and leave his partner to pros pect. At Skngwuy Mr. Mothorn found the streams so badly swollen that ho could not continuo his trip to Dawson tor at least three weeks nnd decided to 'spond tho intervening time in Sulem. Mr. Mothorn has always enjoyed the best of health and saya ho never experi enced a climate ho liked better than that of tho Klondike Ho is frank nnd saya ho tias not become wealthy by any menus, but is contont with his lot thus far. Ho thinks tlio Dawson district far superior in gold production to that of any other section of tho Klondike nnd is of the opinion that pluck aud energy are all that is required to insure the earning of a competency by any indus trious gold seeker. Mr. Mothorn was engaged at his vocation, that of a car pentor, only a short time wlillo in the Klondike, having spoilt all his time prospecting, nt which he was fairly suc cessful. He wbh formerly a raotorman in the employ of tlio Salem Street Rail way Company, resigning his place and feaviug'for Dawson in January, 1808.
