"No doubt thoro will be in somn par
ticulars. An net of tho recent legislature
provides for, and enlarges tho ditties of
school directors, but not having carefully
read thin law, I am unable to say what It
proposes to do,or the changes ti bo made,
"I can only speak for myself on these
mattors; but ono thing Booms impor'ant
nud necessary at this timo, and that is
to advance tho work and
possible, tho interest in

room.
"For soveral years past tho Board
havo had their hands full in looking
after tho finances of tho district, almost
losing sight of all else. Tho supporters
of tho schools have nobly come to our
rcllof. Ai witness the prompt action in
taking up some $30,000 of thu Indebted
ness ugaiust us, and tho willingness to
vote at our nnnuul mootings any tax
lovy the Board might nsk for. I am be
ginning to think, if our schools, are not
up to tho standard of excellence thoy
should bo, It is not the fault of tho tax
payers aud patrons who contribute to
them. .
"It is paid that somo of our
neighboring towns boast of hav
ing superior and more ad
vanced school than tho caiital of tho
statu can or docs afford. But ono can
hardly believe this to be true.
"Many causes of luto years havo con
tributed to give educational institutions
a uacKsoi, especially in caium. ino
largp overhanging debt contracted years
ago has been our stumbling block. How
ever, affairs aro assuming better shape
now, and tho clouds are rolling away.
I do not mean by this that becaueoof
this evidence of returning prosperity wu
should begin to plan for an oxtra out
lay of money, or increase In our expen

ses, but rather let us give bettor atten
tion to tho work already In hand.
"It would bo hard to find a more com
petent and faithful class of teachors
than at presont is employed in tho
schools. Still, it does not follow that
improvements cannot bo suggested or
new ideas gain a foothold.

more grades can, and ougt to he added
to our prosont courso of studios without
additional cost, which I think can lo
done. Wo have tho room, tho teachers
and the scholars; what inoro is wanted?
