formed on Tuesday by C, Vilas and W.
J. Capps, both of tliit oisy. Thu former
handled the plow and the latter drove
the team, of horses, that broke the firjt
ground for the structure.
A Campbell, the contractor, has
awarded tho contract for making the
neueeeary excavation to D. 8. Bent Joy
& Co., ol this city, and three men with
two teams and scrapers are performing
the uork. The plan of the building is
such, tho main floor being at a conshl
arable elevation and reached by a
Might of stairs, that only a small amount
ol excavating will he required for the
tun foot basement. In fact it will be
neceeeary to remove but about 18 inches
of earth from the main situ of the build
iug. The plans call for 3 foot trenches
and these will, be provided. Tho InlUal
operations are being watched by an In
terested company of citizens, that will
probably increase In number as the
work progresses.
