Application and Argument
Made Before Gov. Geer. .
Edward L. Mlmms, of Pendleton, was
convicted and rent to Salem for man
slaughter, and Tuesday afternoon Gov
ernor Geer heard arguments presontcd
by United States Senator Pritchard of
North Carolina, who afterwards visited
tho young man at tho place of his con
finement. Tho Senator was accompanied
by his wifn on this trip and thoy took tho
tho train for California and thoy aro en
route home to Marshall, in their own
stato.
Tho man ho has aukod a pardon for is
a son of ono of tho most prominent fami
lies in Tennessee, his brothor lieing ono
of tho most prominent criminal lawyers
in TonneB60o,W. O. Mlmms of Newport.
Edward L. Minims was a deputy col
lector of revenues undor tho Cleveland
administration and has bean for thirteen
years a resident of Oregon. IIo married
a daughter of Sonator Matlock by whom
he had flvo children. Whon askod by
his attorney yesterday if he would accept
a conditional pardon, based on his leav
Ing Oregon, ho looked dismayed and
shook his head Baying ho could not boar
to llvo bo far away from his children.

near as can be learned from tho docu
ments on file in tho caso aro as follows :
in a saloon row with ono Miller, tho bar
keopor and also n gambler, tho latter
ordered Mlmms out of tho place and fol
lowed him up with an ico-pick In his
hands, Words passed botweon them
and Miller struck Mlmms and knocked
him down, beating him after ho was
down so aa to raise large lumps on his
head. While tho mon wore down,
Mlmms shot Miller fatally. On trial
for murder tho jury hung 30 hours.olght
standing for acquittal, but finally com
promised on manslaughter but recom
uiendel him to tho extreme moroy of
tno court wmen wouiu tiavo been ono
yoar. lie was sentenced for flvo years,
but has been in confinement fifteen
months in all since ho committed tho
crime.
Prominent people are interested in the
release of thu young man, his petition
being signed by United States eenators
from North Carolina and Tenncse'LO, be
sides Governors and Congressmen and
tho Senators from Oregon, and promin
ent citizens of this stato.
