MaKliiley and Uryan have held tho
floor long enough and have had columns
of space in which to exploit their para
mount issues. There oro others. Among
them is Kugene V. Debs, the labor Icador,
and presidential candidate of the social
domocracy. Debs, too, lias n paramount
issue and in a recent speech in Chicago
lie explained it as follows t
''Tho one vital issuo in tho prcsant
campaign springs from tho privato own
ership of tho means of production, and it
involves tho whole question of political
equality, economic freedom and social
progress. This fundamental issuo has
been studiously ignored by both tho ie
publican and democratic parties. It has
been clearly stated and squarely met by
tho social democratic parly.
"Tho alleged issues of tho old paarties
aro all rooted in tho oxlsting euonomlo
system, which thoy aro pledged to pre
servo ana pcrpotule, and which our
party is pledged to abolish. Tho contest
today is for tho control of tho govern
mejet by thrco separate classes, into
which modern society is divided. The
capitalistic class Is represented by the
republican party, tho middlo class by
the democratic party, and tho working
class by tho social democratic party.
Each of theso is committed to tho
economloMnterpsta of tho class that it
represents.
''Tho republican platform consists of
solfcongratulation on tho part of the
dominant capitalistic class. It breathes
prosperity galoro and cries out for 'four
years more.' Tho democratic platform
is tho wail and cry of the perishing mid
dlo class. It is calamity without end.
''Tho social democratic platform is a
plain indictmont of tho capitalistic ays

tern. It Is. n call for class political action
on tho part of tho working class, and its
ringing declaration in favor of the col
lectivo ownership of the means of pro
duction is tho clarion voice of economic
freedom.
"The platform of eaoh party is tho ex
prenion of tho class it represents. The
platform of tho democratic party is the
expression of the small capitalists. It
differs from tho republican platform in
degreo only. Tho difference between it
and tho social democratic platform is
not In degree, but in kind. The platform
of tho republican party favors expan
sion. According to Senator Dopew we
now have only 5 por cent of tho trade of
the Orient and should have 50 per cent.
Tho gotting of tho other -15 per cent con
stitutes the white man's burden nt the
present time.
Tho Democratic party h opposed to
this 'policy, which it donouucoa as im
perialism nnd dcclaros to bo tho para
mount issue of the campaign. Tho dif
ference between tho two parties is so
clear as to be eolf-evldent. Tho small
capitalists, represented by tho Demo
cratic party,lack tho resources necessary
to contiol foreign markets. On the other
hand, expanding markets will extend
the lease of power of tho great capital
ists and enable them to crtieh out thoir
competitors in tho middlo classes. This
is what is called tho burning issue of the
campaign.
"Tho position of tho two old parties
in regard to tho trusts is practically tho
samo. Both favor tho competitive system-
Both condemn its fruits, but fa
vor the system itself. Tho right of cor
porations to exist and to exact tribute
from tho working classes should bo re
spected, according to tho Democratic
party.
"It is true that Bryan denounces pri
vato monopolies, but If ho buliovcs what
ho says, why docs ho not propose to es
tablish public monopolies in thoir place?
Tliero is absolutely no real differ re
between tho Democratic nnd Republi
can parties on that issue.
"It is only a question of timo when
tho concentration of industries will he
complete. Tho interests of tho trusts
aro so completely interwoven that tliore
will in timo bo n trust of trusts. No
power on'carth can arrest tho system ot
combination. It is paving tho way for
a now order of things and socialists, un
derstanding tills trend, aro marshalling
under tho banner of economic equality.
A world-wide struggle is going forward.
Mon fit to bo economic, and political
equals should bo social equala.and under
tho coining regime class distinctions will
disappear from tho world forever.
"Tho thrones of Kuropo nro beginning
totrembln before-tho march of socialistic
idoas and will Boon totter to their fall.
And tho same movement is going on in
tho United States. Under n socialistic
government life will no iongor be a
struggle for bread, nnd tho soul will bo
free from thedomiiiation of tho stomach.
The elimination of tiio economic system
does not mean the olovatlon of tho work
ing class al()iio,hut of all men.
